The Bottom Line:
If all you want is a small CD-only shelf unit that can kick out the jams when called upon, then the Panasonic SC-PM03 is the one to go with.
I bought the Panasonic SC-PM03 for several reasons: price, size, function, and looks - it had all of these things going for it. I had been shopping around for the most inexpensive solution to my quandary of not having a stereo that plays CD-R's in my apartment, as well as lacking speakers for the new computer that I just put together. I wanted something as compact as possible so it would fit on my desk, and something that would easily connect to my computer so I could pipe all my MP3's through it without having to always worry about burning them onto CD. And I wanted the best sound quality possible.
Granted, I'm no expert on sound quality. All I know is that before I placed the online order, I went and checked it out at Circuit City. And this unit held its own with some of the bigger (uglier) boys - even the radio quality was impressive, the stations came in as clear as I can ever remember hearing. It plays CDs, CD-Rs, CD-RWs, and MP3s (at least from the computer, I haven't tried playing an MP3 CD yet) flawlessly, with very little noticeable distortion even at the highest volume levels.
I suppose to some people the lack of a cassette deck might be a concern, but for me, it was a definite plus - I don't even own any cassettes. I wanted effective minimalism, and got it. A couple of the other reviews complain that the blue backlight can get obnoxious, but I don't think so. I have it sitting on a recessed shelf, and haven't thought it annoying for a second. The included remote is intuitive and easy to use, as well. The speakers are made of solid wood; these and the unit itself feel sturdy and durable - I'm not worried about the thing breaking anytime soon. I would recommend this unit to anyone.
