The Bottom Line:
I bought it because it looks and sounds better than the rest. Bang for the buck, it can't be beat. Not even close.
I was looking for something to sit on my living room shelf that would have tasteful good looks and have a full sound at low to medium volume levels. I was not looking for the futuristic "ghetto-blaster" look that's coming back into style. This one not only fit the bill on looks, but I thought this machine sounded better than units costing twice as much or with 10 times the power (in watts.) First the look. It's compact but elegant looking. The stereo itself has a brushed metallic finish and packs a CD/Stereo/cassette into as small a unit as possible. Both the volume and tuner have digital displays backlit with a soft amber glow. The CD is tray-loading like on your pc. The cassette is a side-loading slot mechanism similar to what you'd find in your car. The cassette recording is a little weak since there are no Dolby or bias controls, so I wouldn't buy it if you're planning to use it to record tapes, though playback of pre-recorded tapes sound just fine. The speakers have a nice light wood veneer finish which should go with most decors. I think it's easier to control this unit with the remote than figuring out what the multifunction buttons do on the unit itself because they are a little hard to see. Maybe it's because I can hold the remote at bifocal length. It even has an extra input so I can plug in my TV.
Now for the sound. Wow. I used a favorite CD (classic rock, not rap) to compare an entire shelf of micro stereos at a local superstore. I can't believe the efficiency of these speakers. When I first looked at this unit, I thought (because of its size and power) there would be no way it would sound as good as the others, but it really does. At any volume, the base, treble and full tonal range you get from these speakers is truly amazing. Bass is strong without being "boomy". It really sounds like there must be a subwoofer hidden in the room. There are also four preset eq controls that you can use to tailor the sound the way you like, though it would be nice to have a few more. I play a wide variety of music and movies at home and have not noticed any distortion, even at higher volume. Doesn't have a lot of bells and whistles but it's a great little unit. I'm very pleased with my purchase so far.
