Ever smaller...
Pros
Very light, ultra compact, long battery life.
Cons
Door feels flimsy, lack of any carrying mechanism
Recommended it?
Yes
The Bottom Line:
It does its intended function in a very convenient package.
With the gaining popularity of portable MP3 players, sales of portable CD players have witnessed a steady decline, especially as prices and sizes continue to drop for MP3 units and memory storage capabilities continue to increase.
This has forced companies still addressing the [now niche] portable CD market to create even more innovate product designs to compete for consumers in the personal-audio space. Panasonic has delivered with the SL-CT790.
Overview
The unit is mind-boggling small and light, just larger than the actual CD itself. I doubt that any unit can be created smaller, as the actual size of a CD creates a natural physical design barrier for manufacturers. There is no strap or case included, so it would seem that one would have to carry it using some other method. I find that it does actually fit inside the pocket of my work slacks, and due to the ultra thin width of the player, is barely noticeable.
Sound quality
Audio quality is about what you would expect from a CD player, which is very good. A full spectrum of sound is represented and the included earphones deliver good sonic quality. However, I am just an average consumer and not an expert on sound fidelity. The EQ setting feature adds a very nice touch to tailor the sound to each individual's preference. Skipping is non-existent.
Other points
-Panasonic includes an inline remote that can be attached between the earphones and the CD player. This indeed is a very convenient feature as the buttons on the actual device are quite small and difficult to navigate. The remote unit is also very light, meaning it does not "pull" on the earphones.
-The opening cover to insert the CD feels very flimsy, much like it is going to break off any second. Since I just received the player, I guess time will be the ultimate test of its durability.
-Two proprietary batteries are included along with an A/C charger, and the batteries last surprisingly long.
-Amazingly quiet operation. It's hard to tell that a CD is actually spinning inside.
Hope this helps.
