The Bottom Line:  A great buy price-wise with great sound & battery life.
Going back to 1970,I have always had great luck with anything audio by Panasonic. I have owned several of their cassette radio/recorder/player units. The SL-MP80 is my 2nd portable CD player. The 1st was the Panasonic SL-CT480 which after a number of years & thousands of hours of playing started to act up on me from time to time. It has taken much abuse from being at the beach.

Since the sound & battery life were excellent on this CT-480 and after reading reviews of other makes of portable CD players, I decided to go with the SL-MP80. I looked at more recent Panasonic portable players but I did not like the battery pack associated with many of them. As for remote control, to me that is just another thing to get in my way and that I have to worry about carrying or losing.

Even though this model is 3 years old( copyright on the instructions is 2003), I bought the SL-MP80 new on eBay for $18 +$12 for shipping. It came the original sealed container. I have only just got it and ran it through its paces for what I wanted it to do. I must say the sound quality is noticeably better than the CT480 it will replace. I use Sony MDR-WO8 headphones because the Panasonic ones that come with it did not deliver as good a sound. Also, the volume output was a little greater with this unit that the CT480. The MP80 is lighter but thicker than the CT480. I am not sure if I like the location for the batteries compared to the CT480 but the batteries seemed to be more securely locked in to the MP80. The battery life I expect to be somewhat greater than the CT480. I do like the presence of the battery strength indicator and the fact that it does tell me on start-up that it is reading the disk, neither function of which was on the CT480. I think I prefer the layout of the controls on the CT480 but the display is easier to see and to read on the MP80.

All-in-all, at this point I am very happy with this unit & especially at the price I paid.
