I am most definitely a fan of Panasonic products, and I am happy with this portable cd player (Model SL-S360). HOWEVER, do NOT purchase this particular model. I did and I was disappointed as soon as I got it.
I wasn?t disappointed by it?s functionality, only that it was lacking one very important feature. The display does NOT light up! Not only is it impossible to see at night in my car, but it?s difficult to see during the day as well. Right now, for instance, I have to look directly down on it to read the display.
Right after I received this (I purchased it online at Netmarket.com for $59.00) I noticed that it did not have a light. When I looked back at the Netmarket website I wanted to kick myself. I could have bought the next-higher model for only $10.00 more, which had a light and ALSO came with a car kit. I felt so dumb, because I am usually a very careful and studious consumer.
Ok, I?ve finished telling you why I?m not completely satisfied with this particular model, now I?ll go into the features of this that I do like.
Sleek Design: This cd player is much smaller, thinner, and sleeker looking than my last Sony Discman. It?s relatively lightweight as well, which is a nice touch.
Anti-Shock Memory II: The main reason I purchased this model is that it has a 40-second anti-shock protection that works great. I can drop it and throw it (accidentally of course), and it doesn?t miss a beat when the anti-shock is activated. It eats up battery power faster in this mode (according to the manual), but it?s essential if you?re not sitting still. The CD, without the anti-skip on, will skip at the slightest movement.
Long Battery Life: Panasonic claims that the two double-a (AA) batteries will last 25 hours (not in anti-skip mode). Personally I cannot attest to that because I have used only rechargeable batteries. However, the rechargeable batteries last at least 8 hours per pair, which is far above my expectations, even with the anti-shock on. Also, the unit works well with the Sony car adapter that I had from before, as well as the Recton tape player converter that I use. Furthermore, it comes with an AC power adapter (plug), which I actually never use.
The Basic Features: Like most portable cd players you can play, stop, pause, go forward or backwards within a track or to the adjacent track, all with a click of a button. Also, you can program a 20-track memory, choose to repeat the whole cd or just one track, OR play the cd in random order.
Sound: To add one more point that may not be necessary, the sound quality is great, but it has to be great since it?s CD quality, doesn?t it. It also has a bass-boost button (S-XBS), which adds much deeper bass to the playback, a must-have feature for any portable music player!
Summary: The small, sleek design of the Panasonic SL Series is relatively low-priced and has many features as outlined above. As I said in the beginning, it does not have a light in the display, which is disappointing. Overall, however, it?s a great little cd player. If you can?t afford the $150.00 to purchase one of the ?fancier? models out there, go for this one.
