Catch the Wave. Looks good, sounds fantastic.

Pros Good looks, high qualityi
Cons Pricey
Recommended it? Yes
Several years ago I left corporate America and decided to take my skills on the road as a software consultant. That grass sure looked greener as I was lured away by promises of more money and a four day workweek. The grass was green I made quite a bit of money and did only work four days a week, for ten to twelve hours a day. So you say what does this have to do with the Panasonic Shock Wave? While I was traveling two things were happening that would lead me to buy a Shock Wave two years later.

The stress of being gone week after week was taking a toll on my family. They didn't always say so but I could tell and my absence made the most impact on my then 5 year-old daughter. During all this travel I charged most of my expenses to a credit card that had a very generous points program. The card also had a corporate program that doubled the points. In short number of weeks I had accumulated enough points to begin shopping in their gift catalogue.

I did not order anything right away knowing that there would be a special time when the points would come in handy.

The Time to Order

Two years have passed and I am no longer on the road and those points were still in my account. They have grown some from out family nights out but they were still waiting for the right time and gift need. Last year for my daughter's seventh birthday I decided the time and occasion were right to cash in a portion of the points to get a special gift. She had suffered the most in my absence so it was only fitting she should benefit, be it seemingly small, from the points I had earned.

My daughter is a person that truly enjoys the arts be it painting, drawing or music. She especially enjoys her music and has her group of favorite artists. Over the years she has accumulated several CDs but has always had to use my audio equipment to play them. As I looked through the card's gift book I noticed the Panasonic Shock Wave was available for only a fraction of the points I had available. This was a no brainier, my son had owned a Shock Wave and I was familiar with the unit's quality. A quick call to the credit card Company and the Shock Wave was on its way to our house.

Time to ride The Wave

The Shock Wave is not your basic looking portable CD player. The units yellow body with black and silver trim and black letters make The Wave stand out from its peers. Add a stylish pair of color coordinated headphones and you are ready to rock.

The Shock Wave provides the user with two power options. The player can run on two AA batteries or the AC adapter that comes with the unit. The battery compartment is located inside the unit and it must be open and any CD's removed to access the door and load the batteries. Battery life seems to be good although I would not go far from home without a replacement pair. The AC unit is shipped with The Wave and attaches to a jack located on the back of the machine.

The Shock Wave has a pair of jacks for use with external speakers. I purchased a pair of inexpensive powered speakers for her. The audio quality is not the greatest but it seems fine for a seven year-old. The combination has provided her with the ability to play her music anywhere she may be.

The Shock Wave's controls, except the volume, are located on the top front of the unit. The control buttons include forward and back tracking, start and stop memory recall and a repeat button. If you are going to use this unit in an environment where there will be a bit of bouncing you will find the Panasonic SL-SW505 Shock Wave's 40-second delay very valuable. With 40-seconds of delay you should never hear a skip when listening under any circumstances!

Overall this is a great portable CD unit. I had to pay a price to get this machine and in the long run it was more than the units retail price. This unit is not inexpensive but with the Shock Wave you get what you pay for. This is a high quality unit that should provide many hours of listening enjoyment. I would recommend The Wave for all activities from listening in bed to your daily jog.
