Panasonic SL-SW899V - A Solid Performer

Pros Very durable, AM/FM tuner, in-cord remote, good sound, Made in Japan
Cons High price, headphones
Recommended it? Yes
The Bottom Line:  Solid portable cd player with exceptional sound quality, and is good for use just about anywhere.
When i first bought this cd player i was looking for something that I can take and use anywhere, has excellent sound, preferably a radio, and will last a very long time. The Panasonic SL-SW899V had everything, and I wasn't disappointed, it with all these features and more.

Included in the box:
-The unit itself
-a pair of Shockwave lightweight headphones
-ac adaptor
-in-cord remote
-jogger grip

Sound
The sound quality for this unit was very good for CD and fairly decent for the AM/FM tuner. When playing a CD the sound is quite clear and there is little or no background noise or interference. It has an anti-skip system which works well. The radio however as some slight noise (depending on your location), but there are ways to reduce some of this noise. If you are in the city you can set it to 'city' mode and I find it does reduce noise interference. If you are still experiencing interference you can set the sound to mono. Sound is monaural, but noise is reduced. Other than these the FM and AM reception are very good. Also this unit features the S-XBS or extra bass system, which improves the bass very well. The headphones that come with the player aren't very good. They don't fit very comfortably and can get annoying after a while. It didn't matter though because I got a new pair of headphones anyways. See my review for more information.

Portability
This cd player can be taken anywhere but I find it a bit bulky. It won't fit into normal size pockets (unless you have giant cargo pants or something) but it does come with a jogger grip. You attach the sort of belt to the player and then strap it around your wrist. You can then easily grip the player with your hand and jog or whatever. I personally don't use this because I find it annoying to take off and put on. However as big as it may be, it shouldn't be a problem unless you plan to have it in your pocket all the time (if so than get an MP3 player).

Durability
As far as durability goes it is indestructuble. All of the Shockwave designs features a heat resistant polycarbonate body, water resistant (though you can't submerge in water),and is shock resistant. It should still be in good condition and fully functional if you drop it from 2-3 feet. Other things that are featured are the one touch lock lock and release system, only with the Panasonic shockwave. This is very good for several reasons: easy opening and closing, and keeps moisture and other unwanted things out. Also there are rubber plugs for the headphone jack and the input jacks which keep water and other things out. Inside the unit is the battery compartment (so its hidden and cannot be exposed), and also the cd pop up thingy. You push the button to eject the cd, and thus doesn't damage the cd when you take it out.

Conclusion
The Panasonic SL-SW899V is a marvelous cd player and it is very easy to use, so anyone can operate it. The remote that comes with it works well: It turns the cd player on/off operates the radio and cd player and has dial-type volume control. Some small things to complain about is the huge price tag (MSRP: 239.99 CAN). I wouldn't recommend to purchase it at the MSRP, but maybe around $200 or so. I managed to find a dealer who sold it to me at about $185 CAN. It is truly a solid peice of work and has exceptional sound.
