Panasonic SL-SX280G CD Player
Pros
Low price, size, 40-second ASM, low power consumption, features
Cons
Better headphones improve sound dramatically
Recommended it?
Yes
The Bottom Line:
The Panasonic SL-SX280G is a great inexpensive CD player. And, if you get better headphones, the sound quality is great
The Panasonic SL-SX280 CD player is currently a Panasonic?s basic (and least expensive) model.
There are three colors available: Silver/Blue (SX280), White/Blue (SX280W) and Teal/Blue (SX280G).
The SX280G has attractive design with teal lid. The buttons to control the player are located on the lid along with the LCD. The player is slim and very lightweight. The case of the player is just a little bigger in width than CD itself, and is smaller in width than CD jewel case.
Sound
The sound quality is very good if you use closed-type headphones. Often the sound of many good portable CD players is spoiled by the cheap headphones, which is the case here ? the supplied headphones are adequate, but even $25 closed-type Sentry 880 headphones improve the sound dramatically.
ASM
The SX280 has 40 seconds of Anti-Shock Memory. In ASM mode, player makes the disc rotate faster to compensate for possible interruptions. It also stores up to 40 seconds of music in memory. The 40-second of ASM is a nice feature, but even with ASM off, it takes significant jolt for CD playing to skip, and interruption is very short (significantly less than a second).
CD-R And CD-R/W
The player plays CD-R and CD-RW discs, but you have to make sire the disc is ?finalized? (closed). You can use both Disc-At-Once and Track-At-Once recording modes.
Batteries
The battery life is very long, Panasonic claims 35 hours (with alkaline batteries). The SX280 can recharge and use rechargeable batteries, but I couldn't find them in any store or on the Web. In fact, I couldn't even find them on Panasonic's own website. So you can use it either with 2 AA-size batteries or with supplied AC adapter.
I bought a Rayovac charger and 4 AA rechargeable alkaline batteries, which cost me less than $15. If you buy rechargeable alkaline batteries, make sure you recharge them often, before they are completely drained ? this will prolong their life.
Features
The SX280 is easy to use and has all the necessary features (shuffle, resume play, hold, repeat, memory, extra-bass, etc.). It has electronic volume control and auto power-off when not in use.
Scratched CDs
The player can play scratched and dirty CDs much better than other portable CD players I have seen (Panasonic CD and DVD players usually excel in error correction). It plays the discs that my old Sharp DV600U DVD player would reject immediately.
