Slim and stylish with sub-par bass boost
Pros
Battery life, style, anti-shock memory
Cons
Bass boost distorts
Recommended it?
Yes
Aside from its lackluster bass equalization, this player is just about perfect. The brushed aluminum top is beautiful, and the case itself, at just a touch over three-fourths of an inch, is incredibly slim and light. The included rechargeable batteries are excellent, regularly lasting 6-8 hours, and the battery gauge on the unit provides a handy indicator for when your music will stop.
Pros: Battery life, Style, and Anti-Shock memory
If I had to name the three things I like best about this player, the first would be the incredible battery life. Not only do the included batteries last a long time but they recharge easily in about an hour and a half by hooking up the AC adapter. Attaching the external battery case increases the battery life by almost 20 hours. Although I haven?t tested it, the manual says that if you use all alkaline batteries (not rechargeable) battery life is over 40 hours!
The case is not only one of the most stylish cases around, but it is so slim and light that you can fit it into just about any pants pocket. You can use this while your walking or running too, since the 40 second Anti-Shock Memory II is very good. I have never had the unit skip when the anti-shock was on, and it doesn?t seem to eat up batteries near as fast as other players that use a memory system do. One minor problem with the memory is that you can only turn it on from the base unit, not the remote.
Con: Bass boost distorts
Unfortunately, the major blemish on this otherwise outstanding player is its equalization. To sum it up: it distorts the bass end when you turn on the bass boost. Now, if you?re not too picky about that, then great! But if you are picky about sound quality, you?ll probably end up leaving the EQ turned off. The distortion is still evident even with very good quality headphones, though somewhat less so. The distortion seems especially pronounced in rock and heavy music, and can disappear on less demanding music.
Great style, passable sound
Even with a pitiful S-XBS, the Panasonic SL-SX510 should be high on the list of anyone looking for lightweight, stylish player that has batteries that will last. Those who travel will certainly enjoy it. However, if you?re looking for the best sound quality possible, you may want to look elsewhere.
