Panasonic SL-SX271C Portable CD Player With Car Kit
Pros
Excellent sound, powerful shock protection, nice design, compact and lightweight, plays CD-R
Cons
Impossible to find proprietary rechargeables
Recommended it?
Yes
The Bottom Line:
The Panasonic SL-SX271C is an excellent choice. But if you don';t need the car kit it comes with, get SX270 and save some money.
The Panasonic SL-SX271C is basically a SL-SX270 with car kit (car power adaptor and car cassette adaptor). It has attractive design with silver (there is a variation with blue metallic) lid.
Large and nicely shaped buttons are located on the lid along with relatively large LCD. The player?s case is slim and very lightweight. It is just a little bigger in width than CD itself, and is smaller in width and height than CD jewel case.
The car power adaptor connects to the car?s lighter port (or another power outlet) with 12V DC, the cassette adaptor is basically an audio cassette imitation with the tape replaced by the magnetic head, that produces magnetic field so the magnetic head in the car?s stereo picks it up. Not an elegant solution, but it works well. The back side of the player has a hole to mount it in the car.
The player plays CD-R discs as well as scratched discs.
The SX271C has 40 seconds of Panasonic?s Anti-Shock Memory 3.0, which is a huge improvement comparing with 3 seconds of my old Panasonic S202. With ASM on, you can jolt the player as long as you want (up to 40 seconds, of course).
In ASM mode, player makes the disc rotate faster to compensate for possible interruptions. It also stores up to 40 seconds of music in memory. You would think that it should consume more power in the ASM mode.
The manual says the player consumes more energy in ASM mode (2.6 W vs 2.4 W without ASM), which makes sense, but it also states that in ASM mode the batteries last longer (28 hr vs. 23 with ASM off). Very strange, but whatever the truth is, it is recommended that you turn ASM on to conserve batteries.
Even with ASM off, it takes significant jolt for CD playback to skip, and interruption is less than a second. ASM is supposed to decrease the sound quality (since it stores 40 seconds of music in the buffer in compressed format), however I could not notice any decrease in quality.
The player is easy to use and has all the necessary features (shuffle, resume play, hold, repeat, playback memory, etc.). The sound quality is excellent. The player has ?Extra Bass? (XBS) mode and ?Train? mode, in which the dynamic range is decreased so you do not annoy people on the train. I never use this mode ? what?s the point?
Better replace the headphones with a closed-type ones. This will give you better bass and more noise isolation (both for you and for other people).
The battery life is very long, Panasonic claims 28 hours. It looks like true, I used my first set for a very long time. Now I switched to Rayovac alkaline rechargeables (I had to buy a charger, the player can charge only proprietary Panasonic batteries, which I couldn?t find even at their own web site).
The player takes 2 AA-sized batteries, I bought 4 rechargeables and rotate (2 sets of 2 batteries) ? alkaline rechargeable batteries are recommended to recharge as often as possible to prolong their life, unlike Ni-Cad, which should be left alone until completely discharged. You can also use the supplied AC adapter when listening to the music at home.
