The Bottom Line:
If you need to save some space and gain a little extra functionality this unit will work, but be prepared to make a few sacrifices too.
Well what can I say? I picked up one of these units at Costco about 2 months ago for $89. It was to replace both an older Sony VHS deck and a Toshiba DVD player that couldn't handle .mp3 discs. It also helps cut down on the space used in my media center.
Anyway, the unit is quiet and works well, but I have a few complaints.
1) No external LED display. You can display info on the TV screen itself, but I found I missed having a clock. What irked me the most is that about two weeks later Costco began offering a comparable unit from Toshiba that has this feature for the exact same price.
2) Remote ergonomics. The remote button positioning is generally non-intuitive, unlike my old Sony.
3) No auto tape head cleaner. Is this a feature of only higher end units? It was standard on my Sony, but that was a $400 unit purchased 9 years ago.
4) On screen recording menu. Horrible. Getting the system to record shows on a weekly basis is confusing. Again, Sony sets the standard in this area.
Other than that, I have no real complaints. This is really nothing more than a disposable combi unit that I use for .mp3 discs and will tide me over until I upgrade my TV to something with HDMI.
