The Bottom Line:
Absolutely get this set if you are a typical user
We have owned this 42 inch plasma television for 1 week. It has been heaven. So background so that you can understand why it has been heaven: This TV is used for watching movies and some sporting events in a typical home family room. The lighting is subdued and many people watching are at different angles from the television and not just in front. When the settings on the television are changed from the default of "vivid" (bright and as sharp as possible) to "cinema" (to emulate film in sub duded lighting) the true merits of this plasma television become apparent.
The colors and subtle images on the screen are easily discerned. The picture just sort of float into your eyes. This image is fluid and full of detail. At roughly 8 feet from the screen, the image is sharp and clear. Colors seem correct with greens being a slight bit over pronounced though.
We have a Directv HD receiver. This picture with this input is nothing short of perfect. Even with a DVD impute, this picture is fantastic but not as profound as the HD picture. Older movies spring to life although they are not razor sharp.
I have poor vision. I am nearsighted and have something called astigmatism. With this television I find myself sitting back and relaxing instead of straining to see.
The sound is excellent for on board speaker; the trebles clear and distinct, middle frequencies are not overbearing and the bass discernible and not booming.
The remote control is fairly simple and easy to use once you read/figure out the controls. There are no inputs on the front or side of the set except for a SD card reader. This works very well for images from a digital camera.
The on screen menu is easy to understand and easy to navigate.
The only concern I have is the notion of image retention. This seems to be a problem of all plasma sets. It means that if a static image remains on the screen for an extended period of time, this image can damage the screen and cause a permanent distortion of the picture. I called Panasonic and they assured me that I would have to leave the image for a very long time. Also, if the television is adjusted to a lower contrast level, image retention is less likely to occur. Also, some web sites claim that if you use lower contrast levels for the first 100-200 hours, then the screen "breaks in" and image retention is not a problem. I cannot comment on this, however, for I have the set only 1 week.
UPDATE 10 MONTHS LATER:
Our Panasonic plama is still a pleasure to watch. The color, clarity and even the sound is excellent. It is a treat watching anything from sports to even the news on this set. To date we have had no problems of image retention.
