pentax IQ 200's lit'l brother, IQ170

Pros The 170: is with me when its 4.5X zoom frames my ideas.
Cons Focuses & meters lite slower than the Minolta Freedom 160.
Recommended it? Yes
The Bottom Line:  The Minolta Freedom 160 focuses & meters lite faster. Quickly taken pictures may be sharper more often with the Minolta.
Why do I have a Pentax IQ 170, instead of a IQ 200? First, a used 200 cost 2+ times the price of 170's. Pretty heavy price for the extra 30mm of focal length. Second, tho the 170 loses 18% of telephoto reach to the 200, it gains 26% of wide angle reach. Third, height, width, & depth differ by 0.5 to 1 inch. Doesn't sound like much, but the 170's volume is under 20 cubic inches, to the 200's 40+ cubic inches. Fourth, the 170 weighs 71% less than the 200. Only a big strong pocket can hold the 200, taking the 200 out of the shirt pocket pixer crowd. Fifth, tho all point & shoots have bad telescopic fstops, the 200 is truly disastrous... f/13. With ASA 100 film & bright sunlight, shutter speed is about 1/150th second. This speed for the average unsupported human can't guarantee sharp photos at 200mm. In other words Pentax 200 users look like drunken sailors as they lean on poles to steady their 200mm pix. I love 200mm for my SLRs. But they gather 15.5 times the lite of the Pentax IQ 200. For that reason photo magazine writers have short praise for the telephoto P&S cameras of which the Pentax IQ 200 is the worst offender. Yes, if I can ever afford a 200, I will get one. Meanwhile my 170 & 30 year old SLRs take great pix.
(11 months later)-With more experience with the Pentax 170(& other P&S cameras), here are additional comments about the Pentax 170sl. The Pentax 170 gives excellent contrast & resolution as does Samsung 170 w/Schneider lens, Minolta Freedom 160, Olympus Epic 170 & Pentax IQ 200. All these mid-priced P&S cameras are wonderful. If the really expensive P&S 35mm cameras have better quality images, it ain't much & you'll pay big for the ego boosting images. My 4 by 12 panoramic pix have been praised as professional & worthy of long lasting viewing. Superb looking 9 by 12 inch pictures should easily follow. Even my worst critic (me) has been thrown into silence with nothing to grumble about picture quality.
Criticized earlier for not being a shill for camera makers, I now state some of the features of the Pentax IQ 170. It has flash(on, off or daylite sync), redeye, slow shutter speed & bulb (have a tripod available), Infinity, Spot auto focus, remote, self timer, focus lock, day & date settings & lots of combinations of some of these features. Yes, little is given up tho the Pentax 170sl is very small. Only the newer digitals have more features & are smaller. But what do you gain by making a camera smaller than a shirt pocket camera?... maybe you can lose a smaller camera in your shirt pocket. Anyhow, until an inexpensive digital camera matches the lucid beauty of images of 35mm, the Pentax IQ 170(w/other hi quality P&S & slr 35mm cameras) still give pre-mature owners of $400 & $500 digital cameras fits.
