PENTAX-stic Option S6

Pros On camera editing, size, and value
Cons Lag time, lithium ion battery
Recommended it? No
The Bottom Line:  Simple to use with lots of fun features. Great deal for a 6 mega-pixel camera!
The camera is compact and very well designed. It is about the size of a deck of cards. It is 6.3 mega-pixel which is more than enough for everyday point and shoot. The LCD screen is 2.5 inches. Uses SD memory card.

The camera is equipped with many modes in which to take photos such as landscape, candlelight, sporting events, documents, etc. Additionally, there is an option to attach a voice recording to each photo taken. Having been on long trips I sometimes forget about the significance of a particular photo. But with the voice recording option I can describe or explain the photo to refresh my memory.

The camera also acts a video recorder with sound. The most impressive feature about the video recorder is that you can cut out clips of the video and make a photo out of it. The only requirement is that the video is at least 1 minute in length. The one complaint about the video recorder is that if a video is recorded with the camera in a vertical position it cannot be rotated. Thus, viewing the video would be quite difficult as you would need to tilt your head 90 degrees.

On-camera editing is another feature available on this camera. For example after taking a photo I can alter the photo into black/white, sepa, slimming, or any other options I choose. Moreover, the camera saves the original and the altered photo so the original is never compromised in case you decide that you don't like the black/white version or newly edited version. Moreover, red eye reduction can be performed manually on the camera in case the red-eye reduction setting did not perform as directed. Again, there are so many editing features on this camera it is practically your own little Photoshop. Other features include, cropping, resizing, duplicates, fun frames, and more.

The main complaint on the Optio is that there is a huge lag time when taking a picture. Lag time is defined as the delay between pressing the button to take a photo and the photo actually being taken and captured. When not used correctly, pressing the button may not even take a photo. The response is not as fast as most cameras on the market. This is even more difficult when taking pictures at night. Thus, it is probably not a good idea to ask a stranger to snap a photo for you and your friends. However, one solution to decreasing the lag time is to gently press half way down and waiting a split second before fully pressing down on the button to take a photo.

Furthermore, the Optio uses lithium ion battery. Thus, make sure you are fully charged when you are going on trips where you will not have access to charging station. Option is to buy an extra battery, but the Pentax brand is somewhat difficult to find.

Finally, the quality of the pictures when printed out are better than average. Some pictures may look photoshopped but careful attention to details will refute that idea. Additionally, the camera is somewhat resillient to minor shakes when taking a photo. However, at nighttime photos are horrendous when the photographer has shaky hands.
