The Bottom Line:
Excellent everyday camera with a good video section. I recommend it over many others. Great features and ease of use.
Pentax makes pretty decent products. This camera is no exception. It has a very small footprint/frame and is quite slim. The LCD screen in the back is quite large for a unit like this and is appreciated tremendously. Oh, and on sunny days, it still works and doesn't wash out like other units.
The reason I chose this unit over other comparable units...
1) Cost (I got it for a steal at less than $200USD.
2) Size (I wanted one that I can easily tuck anywhere and take anywhere)
3) Looks very classy and simple
4) Takes 640 videos and unlimited(limited only by storage size)
5) SD card
6) NO CRADLE to recharge or download
My impressions upon receiving this camera...
1) Wow... small, shiny, cute
2) Amazingly intuitive to learn
3) Multiple modes that can be accessed quite quickly
4) Oh man, I need to get a really good case to protect this thing
5) Oh man, that's a big LCD screen
6) Gosh this camera is light!
After use and over 50 shots of various types and with various modes...
Good picture quality, great video for a camera like this, wow, isn't that sunset awesome? Oh man, I can do in-camera special effects and fixes??? This is great!
But.... the camera's AF(auto focus) can be a bit faster and use a multi-mode - multi-focus point system to capture fast action. It does good but like most current point and shoots, you have to anticipate the "moment"... like in my case, the moment of impact when taking a picture of my friend smashing a shuttlecock. I have yet to take a picture of that... but, I did get one of my dog leaping and catching!
I also had the camera with me when I saw a really weird car accident on the side of the road. I whipped it out, pushed the power button, and within 4 seconds captured a picture.
Okay, my likes about this camera after all that..
I love the size of this camera and the versatility of it's internal software. I like the fact that you can us SD cards and the accompanying software that is loaded onto you PC is a pretty darn good one. I like that it has not incurred any scratches on its viewing screen and I don't get a lot of flares when I take shots in all kinds of conditions.
I LOVE the video this unit produces. The modes this camera offers should suffice but one mode, the "Pet" mode baffles me... it takes a while to sort through as you have to pick the type of pet, and the color of your pet. Strange feature. The text mode is awesome.
And one of the better features this unit offers is AF light which helps you focus in a low light situation as well and a wonderful partial flash feature. The partial flash feature helps when you take pictures close up - the pictures don't look washed out with too much flash lighting.
You have to take the battery out to charge it but it sure beats carrying around a full cradle to dock the camera in all the time. The battery lasts okay, I have a higher capacity batter that lasted through 30 pictures along with over 6 minutes of video - it shows that I lost only one bar of it's three bars. So, I think I am able to take another 30 pictures and videos or perhaps maybe another 120 pictures no problem.
Most of the pictures have come out very sharp... the AF feature tracks the item you initially locked onto so that is a helpful feature if you push the button down partially and lock onto something and then decide to move a bit for a better shot.
I wish the AF would act quicker to lock on though. That's the only slow part about this camera. I've tried comparable units to this however, and I think it fits in the middle as far as AF software and speed.
Everyone wants to hold and touch this camera. Just something about the size and appearance. Although the Casio looks more "tech" this one just feels like a more precious jewel in your hands.
The buttons in back are easy to navigate and doesn't take tiny fingers to operate.
Setting the time and date is quick and easy.. .and even when you remove the battery, to charge(even though I have a backup battery) it keeps all the current information.
A useful feature which you can turn off is, a feature that offers to keep the last mode and flash mode you used. You can switch either function off or on. Pretty cool feature.
The camera can be plugged into a TV and set to slide show... really neat. I like this feature a lot.
Get a spare battery, a nice 1+ gig Fast SD card and get out there and take pictures with this feature packed unit. With the price drops, you can hardly pass this Pentax up!
