The Bottom Line:
I would definitely recommend this TV to any potential HDTV buyer. It is a very, very large TV that requires a large room.
I also purchased this TV using the employee discount. At $1699.00 this is a great buy when it retails for $2499.00 plus tax. I paid extra for the white glove treatment where they unpack the TV and set it up. The first TV that was delivered had a large "T" shaped crack right in the middle of the grill. There was no damage to the packing material or to the outer carton. I called Philips customer service and they told me to refuse shipment and to reorder, which I did. I received the second TV a couple of weeks later. I had seen this model in several stores but when I put it in my family room it is a lot bigger than I imagined. I had already purchased a progressive scan DVD player and immediately hooked it up. What a picture! It was like film quality. I then purchased a Samsung HDTV tuner and set it up just in time for the super bowl. You could actualy see the individual blades of grass on the field. The only way I could hook up the Samsung HDTV tuner was to unplug my DVD player because this tuner did not have the RGB connectors. I emailed Philips and several other retail stores and they told me that I needed a DVI cable. This was not true. What I needed was a HDTV tuner with a RGB output since the TV has RGB inputs. I purchased a Zenith model HDV420 which has both the RGB and the component video outputs. The factory default for the H5 HDTV inputs on this TV is RGB. I found the cable at Radio Shack - VGA/VGA Super Monitor Replacement Cable for $19.00. I hooked the Zenith HDTV tuner up today to the RGB inputs and now have local HDTV telecasts on my TV. Again the picture is crystal clear like film quality. There is however no audio inputs on the H5 HDTV inputs so I am using my stereo.
I am very pleased with the quality and picture on this TV. I have owned other projection TVs but this is my first HDTV and I think it was an excellent choice. Now if Philips will only refund the original purchase price on the original TV that was refused shipment since I don't want to pay for two TV's all will be right with the world.
