The Bottom Line:
For the price, you cant beat the picture quality and features.
As the main piece of my new home entertainment center, I thoroughly researched many brands and models of big screen TVs before I decided on the Phillips 5544C. The one thing that attracted me to this television was the plethora of features. Since I knew I would soon be purchasing a DVD player, I knew I had to have the component video inputs. Nowadays, I would not recommend buying a TV without it. The picture quality is awesome. For inputs and outputs, this set supports the following:
- one set of component inputs
- 3 sets of RCA inputs
- 2 S-video inputs
- 2 sets of RCA outputs
- 1 S-video output
For sound output, you can directly connect surround sound speakers and a subwoofer. I can't give much insight on this topic because I connect the TV directly to my receiver (http://www.epinions.com/elec-review-554C-162D32EF-3A11EECF-prod2).
One my favorite features on the TV is the Guide+ programming. Enter your zip code and leave the TV turned off overnight. When you turn the TV on the next morning, you have instant access to your local TV listings. You can sort the listings by time or category (sports, movies, children's programs, etc). When you find a program you want to watch, press one button and the TV will automatically turn itself on and switch to the channel at the specified time. Have a program you want to record? No problem. Press another button and your VCR will automatically be set to record at the specified time. Guide+ programming is excellent for people who do not understand how to program their VCR. I understand how to program mine, however, I'm just too lazy.
Other features on the TV include:
- 2 tuner picture in picture
- comb filter
- multi-brand remote control
- alarm timer (set the TV to turn on at a specified time)
- sleep control timer
- half hour reminder (the TV shows you the time and channel every half hour)
- parental control options
- one set of component inputs
- 3 sets of RCA inputs
- 2 S-video inputs
- 2 sets of RCA outputs
- 1 S-video output
