If you want high quality sound in a small package for $100 or under, find one of these. It will impress in performance and appearance.
Bought this item because I needed a good quality radio/CD for the patio and first, it did not look like something suited only for a teenager; sleekly styled, fabric grill cloth, recessed controls. It was also one of the only ones to publish actual power output; it is rated @ 7 watts RMS/channel. I knew this would be more than adequate.
The pleasant surprise was how clean and not boom box sounding this unit is. It has tone controls that CAN make it over powering in bass response, but I primarily listen to classical music on radio and CD and use only the first stage of bass boost. This reproduces strings clearly, not harshly and bass is understated but very much "there." It can FILL a good sized back yard with sound that totally belies the size of the machine.
The tuner is digital and has 30 presets; the FM section is outstanding in sensitivity even in "stereo" mode. In fact it outperforms a high end (read "wave") table radio I have to the extent that it has become not just a patio radio but the home office radio as well. The remote is tiny but full featured and long range.
This is one portable CD/radio that I would recommend to people who listen to classical music (jazz sounds great as well); it can easily play the role of a small home stereo as well as a powerful portable.
