Excellent boombox if you can find it

Pros Very good sound. Easy to listen to. Elegant design.
Cons May not get loud enough for some. Remote control is not full functioning.
Recommended it? Yes
The Bottom Line:  A nice sounding unit if you can find one. Would look nice on a desk. A little more refined appearance than some boomboxes.
I bought this boombox several years ago at Target as a close-out. While I owned many boomboxes in my time, this is one that I regret giving up. Occasionally, you may see one on the internet.

I can't remember all the specific features, but I can describe some of the highlights of this unit.

This unit includes a CD player, cassette deck and digital tuner. It also included a remote control.

The woofers were 4-inch foam-rolled suspension and the tweeters were approx 2-inches. I believe both speakers had white cones, which stood out when looking at the unit.

I really liked the appearance. This particular boombox featured black cloth speaker grilles that gave it a very elegant look. To top it off, a pair of bass-ports located toward the front-center were chrome trimmed, adding to the appearance.

I also liked the huge LCD display. It stretched across much of the front of the unit. It was probably one of the best displays I've ever seen on a boombox. Extemely easy to read. Very functional.

The sound from this boombox was very good. Bass was decent and midrange and treble were better than average. This boombox had a sound quality that came closer to a small speaker system of a home component system.

This system NEVER became distorted, no matter how loud I turned up the volume and regardless of what I played. It is possible that this boombox featured some sort of limiting circuit in its audio output stages.

I believe this system featured preset eq controls, but I can't remember exactly.

The bass-reflex ports mentioned above really did work on this unit. On many boomboxes the bass ports are nothing more than holes which are poorly tuned to the speakers within. This model featured ports with long ducted tubes extending well into the unit and appeared to actually increase the bass output, as far as I could tell.

There were problems with the unit, however.

The display did NOT illuminate, no matter where you might read otherwise. I don't know why. It would have been a great additional feature.

The remote did not control enough of the boombox. First of all, it did not control the cassette deck, which featured mechanical key operation. But, to make matters worse, I believe the remote could not even switch the unit between CD, tape or tuner. You had to actually get up and switch the source via controls on the top of the unit itself. And, the remote did not control any of the eq/tone functions either, if I remember correctly. That was disappointing.

The possible limiting circuit I mentioned above sometimes caused problems. Since the CD section played at a lower volume than the radio or tape deck, it sometimes was difficult to derive a really loud volume when playing some CDs.

It was basically a trade off. I never heard any distortion, but I sometimes was dismayed by the inability to get very loud.

All in all, it was a nice sounding boombox. Unlike some other boomboxes, it had a sound that wasn't so irritating. Bass didn't seem hollow and treble didn't seem overly shrill. It was easy to listen to when playing all sorts of music, not just rock'n'roll.

Tapes sounded good as well. However, keep in mind this unit only recorded and played back normal bias tapes properly. Chrome or other high bias tapes will tend to sound more shrill because they're playing back on the wrong bias. Also, no noise reduction circuit was provided either.
