PHILIPS PORTABLE CD PLAYER (I'VE GOT MUSIC IN MY COMPUTER WRITE/OFF)

Pros Sturdy, trustworthy machine with good sound quality
Cons Missing a few bells and whistles that would be nice
Recommended it? Yes
The Bottom Line:  If you're looking for a good little performer without a lot of fancy gadgets, this player does the job of excellent sound production.
First of all, I should have Jed P. Fuddplucker, my falter ego, write this review because even he has more knowledge about the world of electronic equipment than I. But Jed refused and said "It will be sum kindy fun to see you make a fool of yoreself insted of me."

So, here I go. At least this piece of equipment is not exactly hi-tech. And it's not part of my computer. What my Philips portable CD player is, however, is my useful tool in writing my music reviews for Epinions. When I started writing music reviews, I used my regular Sony
CD player (which is not portable). This was about as convenient as trying to lug a big screen television around to do tv reviews.

I actually bought this player before I had ever heard of Epinions. For a relatively inexpensive unit (I paid $39 for it) it has a number of features which attracted me to it. For one thing, it has a car cassette adaptor and Electronic Skip Protection (ESP). I've had the player over 4 years and, amazingly, it has never skipped on me. Of course, most of my driving is in Texas which has good, flat roads but we do have a few potholes.

The player has the usual Play-Pause button and a feature called "Digital Sound Processing" which includes the following categories for my listening pleasure: Rock, Pop, Car, and Incredible Surround. I'm sure this is a great feature but try as I may, I can't tell the difference in the sound quality in each category. This may be a result of my advancing age (56) and my decreasing ability to hear but the feature is wasted on me.

The player also has a mode button which allows you to listen to the CD in a "shuffling" mode or to program your CD any way you see fit. Once again, this feature is nice I suppose, but I seldom use it because I review my CD's in the sequential listing on the label.

The player came with a set of "button" earphones which I find extremely useful and comfortable. The sound quality is excellent and that's all I can really ask.

I have listened to hundreds of CD's on the player and it has never caused me any problems.

A FEW NEGATIVES

The player is battery operated only (with the exception of the car cassette adaptor) and it does not use rechargeable batteries. As with most things in life, I have found that it is much better to use the more expensive batteries in the player as they have a much longer life.

There is no remote feature at all but this "negative" doesn't really bother me because I'm always within arm's length when I do my reviews.

The display feature has no backlight button and the backlight lasts only a few seconds after the CD starts playing. Once again, this does not really bother me as I can see the number and time played with ease. However, there is no "time remaining" feature for the CD or the
individual songs.

The player does not have an automatic "search" feature nor a fast-forward or reverse. However, I can fast forward or reverse manually and this "negative" has never really bothered my.

All in all, when I think of what this little jewel can do and has done for me for the very reasonable price I paid, I am amazed. Who could have believed that such a unit could exist even 20 years ago. I'm sure there are better players but I'm happy with my little Philips player and would recommend it for use in reviewing or just listening to music.
