Last One Standing-Strong But Weak
Pros
Does most of the things a HDD recorder should do. Only ATSC HDD recorder available.
Cons
Loses all timer programs if unplugged, and can't label timer programs with text.
Recommended it?
No
The Bottom Line:
A fine unit, just lacking in some features I needed. Last available ATSC HDD unit.
OK. This review is different than others. I am comparing it to the DVR I am replacing (the Panasonic DMR-E80). This review is for others like me who cannot use the DMR machine with an antenna any longer and need a machine with an ATSC tuner. This Philips is the ONLY ATSC Hard Drive recorder available on the market, and it’s getting harder to find.
All in all I do not have major complaints against this machine, but unfortunately it lacks 2 major features that I found I actually not live without.
Most all of the features the Panasonic has, this Philips has as well. It is smaller in height, and much lighter. The major 2 features missing are labeling of timer programs, and loss of programs after 30 seconds.
The latter of these is embarrassingly lacking in my opinion. Most small appliances retain settings if unplugged these days. To have to reprogram all your timer programs after a power outage, moving the machine, or things like that is just silly, especially in a machine that has a HDD. How much money was saved omitting this feature? Sad as it is, I can get past this.
The main issue I have is that I got very accustomed to a feature on the Panasonic. When you set a timer program, in addition to setting the time, channel, etc, you can choose to (albeit laboriously) assign a text title to the program, like “Amazing Race”. That way, when it records, a listing of the text descriptions is shown, making it VERY easy to navigate among all the programs recorded. Otherwise, you must watch each program for a few seconds to find the one you want.
So hopefully this small review will help you since this would have been nice to know before I looked for and bought it. If this feature doesn’t mean anything to you, this is a fine unit.
