The Bottom Line:
If you want a competent home theater receiver and can find one of these it is a wise choice.
The FR975 is my fourth Philips receiver, the first a stereo model purchased 13 years ago. Gradually, as technology progressed and home theater use increased, the receivers were retired or passed on to family and friends while I upgraded to more recent models. All have been without major flaw in performance or usability.
The FR975 is no exception; it's used for background radio, CD/MP3 listening, DVD and television through it's (several) optical inputs. It's always perfect with the most accurate surround decoding I've experienced, has ample clean power, a useful "hall" setting for stereo sources and even a good phono input. The tuner, like most Philips products, is more sensitive than others on stereo FM, an important aspect for me in this "fringe" area; it can receive signals from 100 miles away on the supplied "T" type indoor antenna.
Add to that a loudness contour, DTS and Dolby Digital, S-Video switching, user friendly controls and you have a component that is flexible, powerful and well designed.
As surround sound has become obligatory for even TV watching, this receiver logs a lot of hours daily.
In between my Philips upgrades I have tried Sony ES and top-tier JVC and been grossly disappointed in reliability, usability and performance. They were put on eBay! It's not easy to find Philips receivers in the US (they're popular in Europe), but the hunt is worth it you'll find.
