Awesome picture ...Couple of small glitches
Pros
Awesome picture. Easy to setup. Easy connections. Good price.
Cons
Not really a "con", but make sure it has the latest firmware loaded.
Recommended it?
Yes
The Bottom Line:
Great TV for the money. In my opinion, one of the best pictures of any brand. No problems if firmware kept updated.
We are really not into the whole audio/video thing, but I do try to get the best value for my money. After doing some research to educate myself and looking at new big screens for a few weeks we narrowed our search to either a Samsung or a Philips in the 46-47" range. Not that my eyes would ever be able to tell the difference, but I decided I wanted to get a 120mhz TV. The 120Mhz Samsung was just a bit out of our price range so we settled on the Philips.
After having it about a month we almost ended up taking it back to Sam's, but decided to keep it a few months just to see how things went. We had like 6 months(I think) to return it. The only major complaint was every few days we'd be watching it and it would just shut off. Sometimes it would turn itself right back on. Other times we had to turn it back on. I checked the Philips website and there was an updated version of the firmware. One of the "fixes" was for TVs that randomly shut off. I installed the update and a few days later I noticed yet another update. I went ahead and installed it also. We've had the TV now for about 4 months and it has shutoff once that I know of. Not a big deal. We are going to keep it unless something unforseen happens.
One other issue we had reared it's head after switching to Dish Network(shortly after getting the new TV). When we would switch from DISH TV to a regular OTA broadcast channel and then back to DISH(on an HDMI connection), the TV would display NO SIGNAL. If we turned the TV off for about 10 seconds and then back on, the picture would come back. After some "Googling", I found this is a problem with the HDMI "handshake" from the Dish HD DVR...not really a problem with the TV.
I couldn't ask for a better picture. You could put the Philips next to a much more expensive set and I personally would not be able to tell which one was better. All sets look different, but not necessarily better. Like I said at first, I'm no expert by any stretch of the imagination. But I do know what looks good to me. And the Philips has a very impressive picture. One thing I liked much better than the Samsung(and most other brands) was that the Philips has a flat/matte screen and the others have a fairly glossy reflective screen.
All in all it's a great TV to watch. Very easy to setup and configure. Remote is easy to use. Everyone that comes over and sees it is very impressed.... especially with a program in HD. We are very pleased with it and glad we didn't spend the extra $300-$400 for the Samsung.
