Fantastic TV!

Pros Picture and sound quality; no blurring or hesitation of fast motion; very attractive; uncomplicated remote.
Cons Unless you're standing by the screen you won't notice, but LCDs give off heat.
Recommended it? Yes
The Bottom Line:  We can't imagine a better product and heartily recommend it.
We had planned to buy a new TV in the spring after the new models and consumer reviews of them came out.  But the 10-year-old JVC died just after Christmas.  I was busily researching the 2008 models and was not happy with what I was learning about any of the brands when our daughter-in-law said a co-worker of hers has a friend who works for Woot and Woot had purchased a truckload of Philips TVs.  Woot.com sells one item a day for 24 hours max.  When the item is sold out that's it--no more.  The price is cheap (my husband's favorite word).  So when the 47" LCD Philips top-of-the-line showed up for $897 plus $5 shipping he jumped on it even though he thought a 42" was the correct size for our room.

Set-up was a cinch.  This is a plug-and-play instrument.  He's never had it so easy.  The user manual is easy to follow.  I love that the volume control shows at the left side of the screen and doesn't cover the closed captions.  We have Direct TV but we've never had picture quality like this.  Well, we wouldn't since our other sets are so old, but this beats our friend's Mitsubishi and it has the best picture we'd ever seen before.  We use captioning for movies but the built-in equalizer regulates TV broadcasts fairly well and commercials no longer blast us out of the room.

In the past, except for football season my husband rarely watched TV.  Now I can't pull him away.  This picture's so good he insists we're getting HD.  We haven't signed up for HD service.

Technical specs:  1080p, 120Hz; 2ms response time; HD natural motion; Dynamic dimming BL; Ambient light sensor; 178 by 178 viewing angles; built-in ATSC/QAM tuner; HDMI connections so you can connect your computer.  There are lots of sound enhancements too, but at 30 W. this will never replace a first class stereo.

The off button on the remote puts the TV on standby.  To turn it off you must use the power button on the right side of the set.
