The Bottom Line:
Great for the kids, as long as you consider it a disposable item.
Bought this while on vacation due to problems with our ~4 year old portable DVD player. It was about $89 at Wal-Mart. It worked well for about a year, but now the display colors look wrong about half the time. It seems like there is no blue component to the picture. Moving the display hinge sometimes helps. Maybe it is a bad connector or problem with the flex circuit inside. I was expecting better life after using our no-name portable for 4 years with no problems.
What I liked: Bigger screen than our last portable, but lighter weight. Also, the battery is internal and recharges from an included "wall-wart" transformer. Included remote is functional, but not that useful for the primary purpose of mobile viewing. The unit also includes RCA outputs for composite video and audio (yellow, red, white jacks) so it can be used as a home DVD player hooked to a TV.
What I disliked: DVD door is flimsy. With just a small amount of pressure on the center of the door, it deforms and rubs on the spinning disc underneath. Also, the screen does not shut off when you close the unit, so it is always using power. If you shut off the power, it forgets where it was on the disc, so it would be nice if there was an "idle" mode with the screen shut off, but the unit still minimally powered. I have also not been able to find a way to shut off the screen when using this unit as a DVD player hooked to a TV.
