A Solid Budget Performer

Pros Value for money, sound quality, impressive features list.
Cons Small screen, menu system cumbersome, looking a little dated now.
Recommended it? Yes
The Bottom Line:  Unbeatable as a first mobile, for its sheer value for money.
The Savvy DB is based on the C12/C13 family, and is an ideal mobile for those who have just become converted to the "mobile faith". Coming in at around UKP#40 ($75)it represents excellent value for money.

Its low price tag needn't mean a lack of features, the Savvy features 22 different ring tones, voice-activated dialling, vibrator ringing and even a "bio-calendar" facility which allows you to see your chances of love, energy and success for any particular day after keying in your date of birth and today's date.

Power comes courtesy of a standard NiMh battery which should give about 7 - 10 days standby time or a day or two hours talk time. There is also a hands-free facility available. The quality of sound is generally excellent for such a keenly priced receiver.

The LCD is a two-line dot matrix affair, and shows a graphical clock at the far left-hand side when the phone is in standby. This left hand side of the display is reserved for showing icons in relation to whatever menu item is currently selected. Users can also send "emotion" icons along with their text messages whenever they are calling someone with a Savvy series phone.

However, this is the main area where the Savvy betrays its bargain basement price, the small display becomes infuriating when reading long text messages, and also means that the multi-level menus are hard to navigate around in; you have to wait for the text to scroll across the display, and in some cases, it ends up becoming abbreviated. The Savvy may look a little broad in size compared to some of the latest units on the market as well.

The Savvy concentrates on the basics however, and does them well. As an entry level handset, it takes some beating. Sure, it does not have customizable ring tones, WAP, predictive text, and it may not be the slickest looking mobile on the market, but it is ideal for someone who just wants something that will "do the job". Techno-buffs looking for the latest thing, or hardened mobile users should look elsewhere.
