Could be better...
Pros
Relatively inexpensive. Informative Display. Plays VBR Mp3's. Doesn't skip much.
Cons
Case Design flaw, keeps re-scanning disc. Hard on batteries (of course).
Recommended it?
No
The Bottom Line:
Unless you get it real cheap AND are handy with a soldering iron, skip this one!
I was looking for an inexpensive MP3/CD player to play my collection of Mp3 Cd's. I have spent a lot of time ripping my complete music CD collection into Variable bit rate MP3's.
Radio Shack had a sale on these, along with a couple of bonus items, so I bit. I also bought some adapters to play this thing in my car.
As soon as I got out of the store, I hooked it up in the car, and everything looked great, until I picked up the player to get a closer look at the display. It stopped playing and displayed "OPEN" momentarily and then "LOADING...". This took a while, since it has to re-scan the whole disc. It worked fine after that, so I took it as a fluke.
But, within a week I noticed that if I pushed down on top of the case (between the control pad and the open slider) it would often (>50%) think the case had opened and go through the whole re-scan routine.
I brought it back to Radio Shack, figuring it was a manufacturer defect. Radio Shack replaced it, plus gave me an extra discount, since the price had dropped again since I had bought it a week earlier.
This new one seemed ok... for about 3 weeks. I didn't abuse the players, didn't drop it or force it. But I'm convinced it's a design flaw or bad batch of switches for the cover.
I didn't care to go through the routine again, so I took the player apart (knowing that I was voiding the warranty) and checked things out. Since I was somewhat handy with a soldering iron, I shorted the case cover switch out.
Now my player always thinks it's closed, even with the cover open. BUT, no matter how hard I try, it doesn't re-scan a disk. I now have to shut it off to change CD's, but that's not a big deal.
