My knowledge of CD players was very limited. A portable single CD player with an adapter for car use was as technical as I ever got. Changing or checking tracks while driving was not easy or smart. Tangling wires around a shifter was quite a problem.
I received the Pioneer CDX-FX657 6 CD changer as a gift, and feel that it was the best gift I ever got. After a 40 minute installation by the "professional" installers, I was listening to random play of 6 CDs. The instructions are clear and simple, and the remote control is small and easy to operate. The changer itself is solidly mounted in the trunk of the car, the control was installed 5 feet away in the dash board as though it was designed to be there. No wires, no drill holes, no chance to be ripped off.
The magazine (CD holder) is easily removed from the changer and is lockable so the CDs will not fall out when properly locked. For those who have 2 regular drivers with different tastes in music, a second magazine is a great option. Load 1, 2 or 6 different CDs, and program the player to random play or program every CD. The sound quality is clear and strong with my factory installed speakers, and the cassette player didn't need to be removed to install the system.
The CD changer cuts down on clutter related to carrying several cases when driving. Let's face it, unless you're driving from Connecticut to Florida in 1 day, 6 CDs is plenty of variety for any driving time. Even when driving to and from work daily, 6 CDs makes music boredom hard to achieve.
The Pioneer CDX-FX657 is a very good system for a relatively low purchase price.
