The Bottom Line:
If you have the base controller already installed in your dash (and you might, but not realize it) consider yourself fortunate. A great piece of electronic hardware.
This is not the story of a radio/changer installation.
This is a story of a middle-aged man who woke up one morning and found that, through an "anomaly" in our socio-economic capitalist system, he could access over the web tens of thousands of individual pieces of music, many dating back even to the 1920s.
Hmm, said our intrepid hero, let's see what this means. I can now choose between listening to FM radio -- essentially someone else's notion of what I should like, complete with overloud, constant advertising of a style and tone once thought banned by the Geneva Convention ; or I can listen to pre-packaged cassettes where I pay about $2 a song and have to take the junk with the hits; or I can rip my own CDs, to spec, from the billion-dollar collection of music floating around the net.
It was not a hard choice.
The consumer in question patiently "collected" about 120 of his all-time faves and then "burned" them onto a half-dozen or so Cds.
He then contacted the installer that had sold him his Pioneer in-dash radio and received the wonderful news that the unit, which was feature-rich and powerful out of the box, was "pre-set" to control any Pioneer changer.
Two were offered, a 6- and 12-pak, but the 12-pak seemed perpetually out of stock, so he picked the 6-pak.
Installation took 40 minutes in the hands of a pro.
The unit worked wonderfully, although colder weather is afoot and our consumer has seen comments (on Epinions and others) that this could be an issue.
This is a very happy guy. At least, so far.
