Great sound for a small price.
Pros
Good set of features, nice sound.
Cons
I would have preferred a rotary dial for the volume control.

Yes
The Bottom Line:
Best bang for the buck for buyers on a budget.
I recently purchased a used Toyota Camry and was very disappointed with the sound quality of the factory stereo system.I felt it lacked punch and clarity, and after a few weeks I couldn't stand to listen to it any longer.
Being on a tight budget, I decided to try to replace only the Radio/CD player and see if that improved the sound quality enough to satisfy me. I set a price limit of $150.00 which is at the low end for available CD player units. I considered CD players from Alpine, Sony, Kenwood and Pioneer. In the end I felt the Pioneer DEH-1500 was by far the best CD player in that price range.
I went to several retail outlets and tested the CD players by these manufacturers side by side, alway through the same set of speakers. The Pioneer consistently sounded better than the rest, especially in the low end. It also had an equalizer which could be set to my preferences, which is something most of the others did not have.
Once installed in my car, I was amazed at how much better the stereo system sounded, even though I still was using the factory speakers. Music from the radio and CDs is now very crisp and I am able to turn up the volume without the low end becoming distorted. I now doubt that I will replace the factory speakers.
The Pioneer puts out 50 watts per channel and although this probably won't allow you to shatter the neighbor's windows, it is more than loud enough for my tastes. It features several preset equalizer settings and a user defined setting which is what I use. I found that the unit seems to sound best when the loudness button (which also has several settings) is engaged.
The radio works well and reception seems to be at least as good as the factory unit it replaced. You can preset 12 FM and 6 AM stations.
I was warned by the salesman that this unit, which features a blue colored display, may be hard to see in bright sunlight. I have noticed it fades somewhat when the sun is shining right on it, but it is still very readable. The only real complaint I have is that the volume control consists of two buttons for increasing and decreasing the volume and these are awkward to engage and slow to respond when you want to decrease the volume quickly. When I get a cell phone call, it takes considerably longer for the buttons to take down the stereo volume than the old fashioned rotary dial.
Despite this minor flaw, I feel the Pioneer DEH-1500 represents an excellent value for the consumer on a budget. The enjoyment I get every time I pop in a CD is well worth the modest price of this unit.
