The Bottom Line:
This is an excellent low priced CD Player/AMFM receiver. You do not have to spend too much money for great quality.
When my car cd player was stolen, I wanted to replace it without spending too much money. After researching radios and pricing, I found the Pioneer 2400F at Returnbuy for $90 (including shipping.) It was refurbished, but had all the included accessories.
The head unit comes with installation instructions. All basic items are included, such as mounting brackets, wire harness, molding, screws, and keys to remove it. The instructions are pretty straight forward. If you have installed a radio before, it is pretty simple. If it is your first time, it takes a little while, but the instructions are step-by-step and you will not have too much difficulty. You do need to buy a wiring harness compatible with your car that you will connect to the included harness. Connecting bare wires between the two harnesses is the most time consuming part of the installation.
The 2400F has one set of pre-amp outputs. This is fine as long as you do not intend to use separate amplifiers for your speakers and for your subwoofer. I used the pre-amp outputs for my subwoofer. There is no built in low-pass filter for subs.
Once the unit was installed, it came on immediately. No problems. Unfortunately, there are many small buttons on the front panel. The labels are difficult to read while just sitting, nearly impossible while driving. It helps to read the manual ahead of time and learn the buttons. The 2400F is a CD player and AM/FM receiver. You cannot add on a CD changer. It does play CDR's with no problem, but does not decode CD text, which is unfortunate. I found that to be a nice feature on my old unit. However, the buttons are well lit and the display is easily seen in the daytime, as well as at night.
There are 18 FM presets and 6 AM presets. I do not use it much since radio around NY city just is not that good anymore, however the reception is excellent. The 2400F is not Sirius or XM ready so I would have to get a satellite unit that would transmit a FM signal to my radio. In the future, I think satellite radio will be the way to go.
Power has not been an issue. At 20 watts RMS/45 peak, there is no problem covering road noise without causing distortion. The pre-amp outputs to the subwoofer also work well.
The unit has a detachable face, which seems to be the best way to go for security. My previous radio had a face that went black and supposedly did not look like a radio. Apparently it looked like a radio to the guy who took it.
There are a few other useful features. A three band equalizer is nice for adjusting the sound to your speakers. Also, the Front Image Enhancer (FIE) allows you to cut off some of the higher end to the rear speakers so that you have a better stereo image. I found this useful before the subwoofer was installed because the speakers in the rear gave a better bass response since they were not trying to produce any high end. There are 3 levels you can choose from: 250, 160, and 100 Hz.
Another feature, the Source Level Adjustment (SLA), lets you set the levels between sources. If your CD's start much louder than your radio, you can adjust the unit so that when you switch from radio to CD, you are not suddenly deafened by the level change.
If I had to buy another radio, I would probably but this one again. As with most electronics, the more you spend, the better the product. The 2400F is a great no frills, powerful, low priced unit.
