Totally Awesome Unit!
Pros
Exceptional unit, Strong Power, Great Sound Shaping features.
Cons
Maybe a better description of how all the sound shaping features work would be nice.
Recommended it?
Yes
The Bottom Line:
This is one of the best CD/MP3 receivers I've listened to. A rich, classic look and compliments any interior without screaming for attention.
The Pioneer DEH-P5500MP has a simple, rich classic look to it, not an abundance of flashing displays, rich, bright, and easy to look at. I don't agree with halon that the display is too bright. I think it's perfect and you can connect it in a way it dims at night.
The sound shaping features are numerous. I was able to use my factory door speakers with the addition of 2 6x9 deck speakers connected to a sub amp (with bass boost). The system sounds incredible, much like my son's expensive alpine system ($400.00+) with his sub amp and dual 12" subs in a big box in his trunk.
I still havent figured out all of the settings, there are numerous ones. You can custom set and shape your sound in low mid and high in the custom setting. However, you might not need to since Pioneer has created some defaults as well with names such as "flat" "powerful", etc.
The MP3 player is quick and accurate. YOu can match the level of the radio to the cd player as well. I like the idea that when you eject the CD to insert another, you are muted rather than switched to the radio, a nice extra.
I paid $169.95 from Etronics. From them I also purchased the Pyramid PB310GX 400 Watt 2 Channel Bridgeable Amplifier (with bass control on it) for $49.95 and for the 6x9 speakers I simply bought a pair of cheap althought very HEFTY RoadMaster Speakers RS900 from Walmart at $19.95. You are probably thinking what a crappy system, right? I probably would think the same thing but we would be dead wrong. The Roadmaster 6x9 speakers were bought just to make sure I could fit them in my deck. After installation I replaced them with Sony models but found the Roadmaster were louder and didn't rattle with deep base. Surprise, right?
Getting back to the Pioneer unit, Halon's review (with the exception of too "bright" display stands well for my own description of the system. THe only negative I've found is I don't like the right side button for selecting FM frequencies and used for setup. It's a wheel button with clicks on the top and sides for up, down, left, right settings. It doesn't feel good but other than this button the radio is awesome! If someone told me this radio cost $400.00, I would believe it.
To duplicate my overwhelming approval of the way this system sounds, you might want to consider duplicating the system exactly (the Pyramid amp and RoadMaster speakers). The configuration sounds like I have a 15" sub in the trunk, I'm not kidding. These two "cheap" products have combined, possibly by accident, to be really not cheap sounding. With the Pioneer at the control here, I can say without question that it's a top notch receiver and it will not leave you wanting for much. And it's classic high quality look compliments rather than screams for dash attention.
