Pioneer DEH-P6300: Big sound in a small package.
Pros
excellent sound, cool graphics, lots of features, volume knob, relatively low cost
Cons
documentation sparse, display glare, small buttons
Recommended it?
Yes
The Bottom Line:
Very good quality (in sound and features) with a few forgivable shortcommings (user interface)
Excellent - great sound and a wealth of functions at a relatively low price (250). Not completely without flaws though! Installation is as easy as you would expect from a DIN style housing.
The documentation is a good guide but could use a little more electrical information for the do-it-yourself user. (i.e. what signal is required for the Mute if not used with another pioneer device) As far as the manual goes, it covers each function briefly, and is very needed in order to understand the sheer amount of functions. Some could be a little more detailed and examples (i.e. equalizer settings) would be helpful.
The display is bright and sharp, mostly under good light condition though. The glare of the face prevents the display to excel in convertibles under bright daylight. This is rather typical for this technology. Under good condition, the displayed information and especially the entertainment effects (3D graphics) know to impress. Just remember to watch the road.
Another reason to get distracted would be the small buttons that do not support blind operation very well. Their shape doesn't give much feedback regarding where you are. One exception is the very useful volume knob and equalizer toggle switch - very handy. The included IR remote control could help, but simply doesn't work with hide-away installations (i.e. Honda S2000 or delSol). That's the point where I wish it would support wired remote control (ideally compatible to the car mentioned)
Most important though is the sound, and the 4x50W MOSFETs are living up to their expectations. (Excellent!) Driven up to about 80% they stay very clear and the equalizer / powerband make a separate subwoofer virtually unnecessary. Unless you have a 'deaf wish'. Besides, you can drive the rear speakers as a subwoofer too - nice feature.
The full effect can only be reached with the proper speakers attached. I noticed a significant improvement when upgrading from the factory (paper cone) speakers to the TS-A1665 (3way) with a clear bass up to high volume. (other speakers may get similar results)
Overall I really like this radio. A few little flaws don't keep me from enjoying the rich sound, which almost sounds like I am making advertisement for it. Anyway, the prices on the net are good and 250 is certainly a steal for this radio.
