Excellent product

Pros fantastic display, easy to use, superb sound quality, excellent tuner, and useful MP3 features.
Cons None, still looking
Recommended it? Yes
The Bottom Line:  I recommend this deck without hesitation. It has the quality and functionality for the most demanding audiophile, with simple functionality for the novice.
I purchased this deck in an attempt to replace an Alpine CDA-9830. The reason I sold my Alpine after having it for a whopping 2 weeks was the poor display. The new LCDs are very difficult to see in direct sunlight. So, after reading some reviews on the sound quality and bright display on the 8600, I took the plunge, sight unseen.

Upon installation I was very impressed. The display is beautiful! It has only three colors, but it makes a great display that is easily seen in direct sunlight. The backgrounds and display options are also entertaining. There are digital movie clips to choose from, wallpaper, equalizers, and more to download from the Pioneer website.

The menus and adjustments are so straightforward. It is hardly necessary to read the manual...but you should. Compared to my Alpine CDA-9830 the 8600 is a joy to adjust. The crossovers are independent for front, rear and subwoofer. Each crossover also has a selectable slope. This seemlessly blends all three different crossover points, so no frequencies are completely cut out. It gives you total control for optimum sound.

After using the Alpine CDA-9830 I thought I had a bad radio antenna. It seemed I couldn't get even the strongest stations on any of the three radio settings. Needless to say the antenna was not at fault. Reception with the 8600 is excellent. Now I pick up all of the stations I want. I found out you can get numeric ratings on tuner sensitivity for any deck at crutchfield.com. The lower the number the more sensitive (better). The Alpine is a 9.3 while the Pioneer is an 8.

The MP3/WMA/WAV options are fantastic. Instead of using conventional CDs with all the hassle of changing them in the car, or using a CD changer, you can use MP3s. You just convert your CDs into MP3s, save them in a file on your computer, and burn the file onto a CD. The MP3-CD will hold about 10 conventional CDs worth of CD quality music (128kb/sec). Also, when you do the MP3s you get to put song/album title/track numbers that is displayed on the deck (up to 64 characters). I just cannot believe how nice a feature this is. No more scratched cds from constantly switching and storing in the car.
