Fetish and Function
Pros
Unique style, plenty of sound.
Cons
Where the heck is that humming noise coming from?
Recommended it?
Yes
I was not at all looking for a new mini system when I happened upon this item at my local electronics outletter. In fact I was browsing for a new television until I found myself diverted to the stereo department and low and behold it was love at first sight with the Pioneer IS - 21MD. It's silver design with separated power amp and verticaly sliding CD tray peaked my senses and the attention to detail with chrome style trimming was just too sweet. I especially liked the analog power gauge all light up with an incandecent blueish glow. This system just screams style and is set apart from the many over stated Cylon Warrior clones out there.
The IS - 21MD is not just show, it's got alot of go. 51 watts per channel bumps the music nicely, filling my apartment with enough sound to leave me not for wanting more power. It's got all the components I need with it's built in Minidisc player / recorder, radio and of course CD, not to mention a front accessable line in and out for portable players and an optical line in.
This system is really all about style. It looks just so damn sharp, something that you want people to notice, not a system that you would want to hide in a cabinet. CD loading is fun. Just brush your finger on the feather touch button atop the player and the see through verticle CD face slides silently away and pop in a fave CD.
Unlike some other MD recorder systems, the recording function in simple, just two buttons and you're burning music with all the standard capabilities of electronic music labeling or what have you.
Some notions about the Pioneer that could be improved upon are minor, such as the brilliantly glowing digital read out is hard to read from a distance greater than 6 feet. It's equalizer is only set up for slight bass and treble control and offers no great control for adjusting the sound frequency. Also if the power is left on without playing music you can hear a slight humm coming from the power amp, making me think there may be a grounding problem somewhere.
All in all, it's just a beauty of a player and it's a real conversation piece when folks come by for a visit. There's also the IS - 21T with a tape deck instead of the MD player for those of you who still can't break away from an analog lifestyle.
