Tacky Design Ruins Sound Effects

Pros Good musical playback quality
Cons Ridiculous design
Recommended it? No
The Bottom Line:  The music sounds good, but not much better than on a cheap machine. The style is ridiculous - you'll like it for a month.
My best friend bought this model of Pioneer stereo not too long ago, and brought me over to his house to show it off almost immediately. I must admit that I was impressed by the sound quality, and by the unique style of the unit. My friend felt that his new stereo set him apart from other people. He was right. Unfortunately, it set him apart in rather embarrassing ways.

His new Pioneer stereo showed that he wasn't smart with his money. My friend doesn't make a bundle, but he was so eager to impress me and his other friends that he was willing to incur about $700 in high-interest credit card debt for a stereo. Yes, the sound is nice, but the fact is that smart shoppers can get good sound for $100 to $150 dollars. My friend could have bought about 50 great CDs with the money he spent on this wierd piece of equipment. No, the stereo won't let the listener hear the belching dog down the street from the studio where a CD was recorded, but it will play plenty well what normal people want to hear. If you're an electronica fan, this Pioneer stereo may make a difference for you, but otherwise, it's nothing more than an extravagant status symbol.

And what a symbol! The first few times I saw this stereo at my friend's house, I thought it was really cool looking. Later on, however, the surprise wore off and I realized how tacky-looking it is. Every time I see this stereo I think of the song "Mr. Roboto" from the early 1980s -- it seemed like a good idea at first, but it didn't take long before it got annoying.

The design of this stereo just tries too hard. Give me simple black components any day -- they let the music speak for itself. If this stereo were in my apartment, I'd keep it hidden behind the closed doors of my entertainment cabinet. I wish my friend would too.
