Pioneer Rocks!

byluvog Apr 13, 2002
Pros It's Beautiful & cheap. Its sounds great too!
Cons No tape recording abilities.
Recommended it? Yes
The Bottom Line:  This system is a superb, gorgeous system that's well worth the money, and has excellent sound quality. The highs, mediums and lows are all clear and crisp.
I bought the IS-21T several months back. I had been without a stereo for a while. I went searching for a quality small system for under $500. I checked all of them, but when I got to the Pioneer IS-21T. I stopped and was immediately blown away before even hearing it. First, I believe, from experience that pioneer is a superior company. Second, it is an absolutely gorgeous little system. I was in love.

Thirdly, this system delivered the highs, mediums and lows in a way that very few systems of its size do. The sound was rich, deep, crisp, clear, with each sound completely separated and never drowned out by other sounds. I tried out two different kinds of music on it to see its range and abilities. I tried some techno first. Every note was completely crisp, while not skimping on the bass. If you are any kind of techno, dance, R&B, electronica, etc. fan you will understand how bass can drown out the highs in a song. The bass was deep and rich just as it should have been but yet none of the highs of the songs were lost. I felt like I was listening to a little orchestra or something. I guess it's hard to explain. Then I tried something a bit a harder and rougher. It delivered just as well with high hats, cymbols, and snares (more of the highs) as it did on the bass guitars, bass drums, and raging guitars. I tried a few other types of music out on her, and there was nothing that did not sound good on this stereo.

This system is a work of art. I love it. Ok, but there are two downsides that I can think of. These may only bother me. One was that the acoustics of the place where I bought the stereo (Circuit City) were set up perfectly to make everything sound the best it possibly can. Now, upon arrival at my very not acoustic apartment, the system did not have as good of a sound as it did where I bought it from. But, I am not saying in any way that it sounds like crap, but just not AS good. It still delivers really great bass, and incredible crisp and clear highs and middles. Everything is separated just the way it should be. If you have a very acoustically sound home you have got it made in heaven with this little baby. Ok, number two con. I have the model that is the Cd/tuner/cassette model and not the Mini Disc model. The problem, which is very small, is that there is only one deck. Not two. Which means if my old-fashioned self wants to record one tape to another I cannot. Actually, I can, but not directly. I can hook up a tape player into my stereo and play it in while recording on the tape in the system. Did that make any sense? I hope so. Oh, and the only other thing someone might be able to hold against it is that, although very loud at its highest setting, it only goes up 36 notches. However, I am not attempting to deafen myself at my tender young age and so yes this is plenty good enough for me. 36 notches is really, really freakin' loud.

It?s no Bose but it?s definitely the best sounding smaller system of its class that I?ve ever heard. If you buy this system I am totally convinced you will not be disappointed. However, what turns me on may be what makes you want to vomit. And, always make sure you test and try out everything before you buy it.
