SWF seeks simple, well-behaved CD player for Jeep. Pause button a must.

Pros Nice style, great sound even for stock speakers, easy to use.
Cons Doesn't play MP3s, detachable faceplate takes a little coaxing, pause button tricky at first.
Recommended it? Yes
The Bottom Line:  I highly recommend for anyone in the market for an extremely simple, yet stylish and good-quality CD player for their car.
I recieved the Pioneer DEH-1600 in-dash CD player as a graduation/part of a birthday gift from my boyfriend, just a few days after I got my first car. It's features include: a CD player that is CD-R and CD-RW compatible, FM/AM tuner [with "best stations" memory], a detachable face plate, and quite a few equalizer presets, including "Custom."

Style & Buttons
With very responsive buttons and easy navigation, Pioneer did a great job styling this face. The coloring consists of various neutral silver tones, a blue-lit screen and bright green-lit buttons. I love it, it's easy to use and gets the job done, period. It's probably not for the bling-bling age; it's not flashy or multi-colored or anything. I like it that way though, what do I want a big, bulky, chrome-colored TV-looking thing on my dashboard for? One that just screams "break in and take me, I'm yours." Haha.. but seriously, it's straight to the point, no nonsense, and it really fits any lifestyle or age- whether you're a 17 year old looking for simplicity & style or a parent who doesn't want something too flashy for the family car.

I love that this player has a "pause" button, unlike most other ones, which you have to turn off or down everytime you need silence. It took me a good week or so, though, to figure out that the "Pause" button was actually also the number "6" button for the best stations memory panel; it doesn't have its own button. That can get a little frustrating when you're trying to turn down the music in a rush and really just switching back from radio to cd over and over, heh.

In the upper left hand corner, there's the clock button. If you hit it, it switches the display from track number/time to the clock, or vice versa. Underneath that are the 2 volume buttons, NOT a volume dial. Just an up-arrow and a down-arrow. Beneath those, there's the equalizer button. Change between Powerful, Super Bass, Natural, Vocal, Flat, or your own custom preset. I personally keep it on Powerful, it seems to be the most clear sounding and, well, powerful. The entire center-bottom of the face includes the Source button, to switch between the radio and cd player, then 6 best stations memory buttons [some of which double for other functions, such as "Repeat," "Random," or "pause"], and then the LOC/BSM button, and finally the "LOUD" button, which I was warned never to touch by my boyfriend. My speakers can't handle it, I guess- but I'll admit it does have a nicer sound when you do use it. It just adds more bass to the music. And finally, the Eject button is at the end of that long line.

Moving our way up along the right side of the display, we have the Band button, to change between AM and FM. Then 4 arrows for skipping forward or backwards through CD tracks, or scanning the radio. And lastly, there's the CD eject button and Audio button to select various sound-quality options.

All of these buttons are pretty accessible while driving, the unit is well-lit and easy to memorize. The only problems I ever have are the one with the pause button, and the face plate removal button- it takes a little jiggling to actually get the face off, but only sometimes.

Sound
So I've had this CD player almost as long as I've had the car, and I love it. Even though my stock speakers- which are over 10 years old- aren't the best, this CD player seems to work well with them. I just need to remember not to turn the volume up over 15 [out of a possible 30]. No big deal; 15 is plenty, and sometimes too, loud. And don't forget, if you have crappy speakers like mine- don't play around with the LOUD button.

All in all
I like this CD player alot. It's not confusing whatsoever. Everything is spelled out for you right there on the face, there's no weird abbreviations or extensive sound settings. Nothing fancy, but not cheap either. It's perfect for me; easy to figure out, easy to use, fufills all my needs for a stereo: pause button, radio with preset tuner, good sound, easy volume control. Easy everything control.

Bottom line: this CD player is for the person who simply wants a good CD player & a radio in their car.
