Excellent basic MP3 player

Pros Sound quality, price, functionality
Cons small buttons
Recommended it? Yes
The Bottom Line:  A very good CD player with great functionality at a great price. However, if you like show, look further.
For some time, I had the worst luck with car CD players. The first CD player I bought was a Pioneer unit that was stolen from my car within one week from the day I bought it. Then I had three consecutive cd players from Sony and Aiwa that came from SKIP CITY (one was so bad that it skipped cds when my front wheels were not correctly balanced).

Then I finally decided to buy a CD player from Pioneer because of a previous great experience (very short, but great). I found this DEH-P4600 model which was the cheapest MP3 player pioneer had. It cost $180 from Best Buy.

Features:

The feature that I was most interested in was the ability of playing MP3 files, and this one did just that, and also plays WMA files as well. The sound quality of MP3 files is just as good as original Audio CDs for the untrained ear, which is just what mine is. I stored all my 17 Audio CDs in just 2 MP3 cds, and changing CDs is not a daily task anymore.

It reads the ID tags of Mp3 files and displays it in a scrolling text mode. Or you can also opt to see the file names, though they appear with the .mp3 extension.

Files are organized just the way you burn them to a CD, however they are sorted by alphabetical order, so you have to modify the filenames if you want a specific order (that will happen basically in all mp3 players).

Audio Quality:

This unit has a maximum power output of 50 watts per channel. That is just fine for most people, however if you want more sound you'll need to buy amplifiers and woofers. The sound quality is however excellent. It has several sound settings so you can customize it the way you want it, and select the frequencies you want to change.

It also has a special sound setting that Pioneer calls BMX 1 and 2, or Comp 1 and 2. They don't alter the sound that much, but are good nevertheless.

It has 2 stereo preamp outputs which are perfect for connecting amps and subs.

Interface:

It is an easy to use unit once you read the manual, especially for the advanced sound settings. Some of the Buttons are very small, but are well spaced so you don't press one for the other. It does come with a remote control, so that's not really an issue. The volume control is a rotary knob, which is much better than pressing buttons. The display is relatively big and doesn't dim at direct sunlight.

Radio:

I don't use much radio these days, but the reception is good, and it has a total of 18 station memory for FM and 6 for AM. It also has a Best Station Memory which is handy when you go to another area where radio listings are different, so it saves the best stations but keeps your stored stations.

Conclusion:

For the price, this is just as good as it gets. It has all the features you would need from a cd player and then some. Audio quality es great and functionality is also great. You can't go wrong with this one.
