Great in-dash receiver
Pros
Depth of audio adjustment settings, iPod support, subwoofer controls
Cons
Could have done more with a color screen (videos, etc)
Recommended it?
Yes
The Bottom Line:
Great for the car audiophile, way ahead of Alpine, Eclipse, etc.
I bought this to replace a cheaper Pioneer head unit I had in my 2000 Mitsubishi Eclipse GT. I have Boston Acoustic speakers, BA subwoofer, and JL amps, and the old basic head unit just wasn't doing it. I did some research on this head unit and found that it had some great audio controls that I needed. The thing that I love the most about all pioneer head units is the subwoofer control. As long as you have the subwoofer hooked up via RCA cables to the head unit you can control the frequency and sound levels of the subwoofer. You can also specify which way it is facing, etc. The other audio control I found to be amazing and extremly noticable once you set it up is the TA (Timing Adjustment) setting. With the TA you can adjust when each individual speaker fires making the sound in your car more level and clear. This helps a lot if you have a bigger or smaller car. For sedans and such the preset TA settings will work just fine. The head unit also has a full 16 band EQ which is great to adjust your settings for the type of music you listen to. I found it helpful to go through the presets, pick one, and then adjust that one to get closest to what I want. It also has a front and rear high pass filter which is nice if you don't have an amp for your speakers, if you do, it's kinda pointless. It has enough pre-amp outputs to support pretty much whatever you're gonna throw at it. The color screen is nice and displays text crisp and clear. It's also nice if you have a color theme on the interior of your car, you can use certain background displays and lock them to a color if you do. It has a couple pointless, but neat "show-off features." The biggest one is the vehicle dynamics display. After you calibrate your head unit to the car it will display your current RPMs, battery voltage, etc. It's kinda cool, but is distracting if you are driving. The iPod controls on this with the optional iPod add on are great. It scrolls very fast, almost as fast as the iPod and displays the full song, artist, album, etc (rather than just 8 characters with the old add-on). I also have Sirius hooked up to this head unit, although I use an external receiver, I've heard the Pioneer model works great with the head unit. This will give you everything you want and more.
