The Bottom Line:
I'm completely happy with the DEH-3800MP, and I think most others would be too.
After purchasing a newer car, I was once again looking for a nice CD player with MP3 capability. After a downright terrible experience with my last one (a Clarion) I decided to give Pioneer a try.
After a little searching, I picked up the 3800MP from crutchfield.com for $150 including the installation kit and directions.
First off, this thing looks very nice in the dash. I will note that as of October 2006, Epinions shows the wrong picture of the unit. The one currently being shown is an older unit, the 3800MP looks a little more modern.
The 3800 is an awesome little unit for the money. The radio tuner is typical Pioneer (excellent). FM stations come in strong and clear, and the AM tuner is good at rejecting interference.
Sound quality on the Pioneer is superb. The built in amp has enough power for nice strong bass while maintaining crisp, clear highs and mids. The EQ curve presets are pretty good, and the 3800 also allows the user to create a custom curve if desired. The level of control that the 3800MP offers for using a subwoofer is astounding for the price. It offers an adjustable highpass filter to roll of the deep bass going to your small speakers to prevent distortion as well as an adjustable crossover point for the subwoofer output.
The CD player in the unit is excelent as well. In about 6 months of using it, I can't recall once that the CD ever skipped, and I drive some very rough roads. The MP3 functions also work very well and are easy to navigate by feel alone.
I also purchased an adapter to add an RCA jack line-input to the unit through the CD changer connector. I connect an IPOD Nano into the line in, which also yeilds excelent sound.
There's a ton of features for the money on this stereo, some are obvious, some not, so it's advisable to read through the manual to familiarize yourself of all of the capabilities.
Overall, it's highly reccommended.
