The Bottom Line:
I'd recommend this unit to just about anyone. It's easy to use straight out of the box, but has the options for enthusiasts as well.
I purchased this unit as a replacement for my previous pioneer deck which lasted me 5 years before it died. Considering how much I used it and how hard it hit my 6x9's without the help of an amp, that I got pretty good use of it for just over $100 and that another one would hopefully serve me just as well. So far I'm pretty happy.
It's got that great pioneer sound, especially in the low range. The car I purchased had a sony unit in it to begin with, claiming 52x4 watts, yet the bass totally sucked. I've got a pair of Soundstream SST 6x9's (which put out very well) so I knew it wasn't the speakers. Even with cranking the loud and bass setting to the max the Sony didn't produce half the clean bass that the pioneer did straight out of the box without any adjustment. The display is great, plenty of characters so you can see the info on MP3's and WMA's. The adjustment knob was a good addition for volume. And the unit itself seems durable. I've only had it for 9 months but it's worked fine in the 100F days in the summer and the 10F days in the winter (I live in Utah, we have the best of both worlds here!).
The setup is about the only thing I can whine about. Pausing the CD is goofy, requiring you to go into an option tree to select "pause", opposed to a single button on my old pioneer deck. The selection buttons for CD,MP3,WMA tracks are ok but a little small. There are so many options that you get lost for the first 6 months using this deck. Once you get to know it, it works fine for you. But it takes a while. I take the complicated nature over not only because it allows you to tune the stereo to just the way you like it, even if it takes a while to learn all the fine tune adjustments.
