Excellent DVD Recorder with HDD

bytizzo Jul 18, 2007

Pros One of the largest HDDs I've seen. Highly configurable.
Cons No TV program listings. Limited functionality through the USB port.
Recommended it? Yes

Let me start out by saying that when I buy something as expensive as this, I research the heck out of it, and the Pioneer DVR-640-HS was not my first choice. I had actually chosen a Pansonic model that was a bit more expensive, but received better reviews overall and had a slightly better feature... Read full review »

Pros functional, built in tuner, 160 GB hard drive, DVD recorder, quiet, inputs, DIVX,...
Cons none! (show title issue fixed with firmware upgrade!)
Recommended it? Yes

I've owned a VCR of some brand or another for at least 20 years. I've always used it to record shows that I cannot watch live or don't want to. After all, isn't it more time wise to watch a 22 or 44 minute show in 22 or 44 minutes rather than 30 or 60? Sure, I bought some movies on VHS, but for the... Read full review »

Pros Huge HDD, fast dvd copy, quiet, good user manual, affordable, commercial skip, chase play
Cons No DV input, title name problems, bad remote design
Recommended it? Yes

This is an awesome dvd recorder! It works very much like a regular VCR, which is exactly what I wanted. Thankfully Pioneer decided to do away with the TV Guide feature, which was supposed to be awful on the older models.

This unit is fast, quiet and easy to use. You can set timed... Read full review »

This is my second Pioneer DVD/HDD recorder. I was very happy with my first one - DVD 533HS 80 Gb so when we wanted a second one for another room, I immediately looked at the newest Pioneer. I immediately dismissed it because it didn't have firewire capability which I use with my DV camcorder. My... Read full review »

Pros Intuitive menus, loads of features, various media playback, responsive recording, quiet,...
Cons No HDMI output, lame remote.
Recommended it? Yes

I bought the Pioneer 640H after much research and deliberation. This unit is a fantastic piece of work. With that said, you should be aware of its limitations, they may or may not be a problem for you, depending on your needs/expectations.

1) No HDMI output. It does have component output,... Read full review »

Pros Many recording options, from DVD disk type to copying and editing on hard drive
Cons Set up and understanding info contained in manual slow process
Recommended it? Yes

You get what you pay for ... a cliche I know, but in the world of DVD recorders, it's very true.

This machine does almost everything you can think of:
1) Records TV programs onto it's hard drive (for future editing) or directly onto a DVD disks.
2) Plays picture files from a USB... Read full review »

This review is about the Pioneer DVR-640H HDD 160Gig, I own it for a month.
(Another good choice might be the Panasonic but it's more expensive)

I think this recorder is one of the best, I have three different DVD players from Pioneer, I think they do good product, my first one has... Read full review »
