Sweet head unit!

Pros Supports VBR's, great steering wheel remote, and nifty display graphics!
Cons Everscroll doesn't work with XM. Device to upload new graphics is costly.
Recommended it? Yes
The Bottom Line:  A great sounding head unit with lots of fun bells and whistles. Supports VBR MP3's and WMF's. Steering wheel remote enhances driving safety.
Recently my car was burglarized, and I got to "upgrade" my car stereo... I was able to choose any MP3 capable head unit that I wanted (I could pay the difference to upgrade the car stereo above what had been stolen.), and I chose the DEH-P760MP head unit.

Let me tell you, the Organic Display is a lot of fun to watch! The swimming dolphins and the Star Wars, Death Star attack inspired screens are pretty darned mesmerizing to say the least. I dug into my manual and found that it was possible to upload my own faceplate graphics. Time to "geek out!" or so I thought...

The USB serial device that you need to upload your own graphics to the display costs well over $100.00! Urk. I did talk to a Pioneer rep on the phone, and he told me that there are usually 1-2 high end car audio stores in larger metropolitan areas that have the device in-house, and you can bring in a CD-ROM of the graphics you want loaded onto your faceplate, and they will do it for free. I haven't really pursued this yet, but it is on my list of things to play with soon. :D

The MP3 playback and control is very easy, and sounds great. The 760MP supports VBR MP3 files, which is a major bonus. VBR or Variable Bit Rate MP3's vary the amount of compression used within an individual MP3 file in order to give you the best sound quality in the smallest amount of space. Not all car based MP3 head units can play VBR files, and that feature should be a major selling point to you if you use MP3's a lot.

CD playback quality, both regular and MP3, is excellent. The 760MP supports fast forward and rewind of songs of both regular CD tracks and within individual MP3 files. I drive for a living, putting well over 2,000 miles on my vehicle every month, and I have yet to hear a CD skip, regardless of what type of road I am on!

FM reception is on par with the rest of Pioneer's head units. Their Supertuner is one of the most sensitive tuners on the market, and has been for years. FM sensitivity is one of the reasons I always choose Pioneer for my head units. The 760MP is no exception. Great FM reception with a total of 18 presets, as well as 6 AM presets.

The built-in MOSFET50 amplifier provides 50Wx4 to your speakers. Adjusting the tonal quality is accomplished with their "Easy EQ". This built in equalizer provides 5 preset curves and 3-band equalizer, as well as independent front/rear tone settings via their "Sound Focus" EQ's . EQ-EX, essentially an enhanced loudness function, boosts the Easy EQ setting you've selected, for an even more powerful output.

If you are planning on adding amps to your system, the 760MP offers three sets of preamp outputs combined with a built-in high-pass filter at 50/80/125 Hz, and a built-in low-pass filter at 50/80/125 Hz that will allow you to send the music signal to individual amps and speakers for the best sound quality. These crossover controls are easily accessible via a menu, with little nesting involved. Very easy to find and get to.

The 760MP also includes various pre-amp inputs as well as their IP-Bus Control which allows you to daisy-chain other Pioneer devices, such as my GEX-910 XM receiver, a multi-disc CD changer, a DVD player, a TV tuner, and even a special connector that is to be used in case Pioneer dreams up some new device. They build in future upgrading compatibility!

The 760MP includes a flip-down, detachable faceplate for security. Make use of it. I cannot stress this enough! I had a slightly older Pioneer MP3 capable head unit prior to this one that was stolen. The thieves hit almost 10 cars in my apartment complex only going after cars with aftermarket car stereos that didn't have car alarms. I had just returned from a really long road trip that night, and was just too damned tired and lazy to remove the faceplate. That little bit of stupidity cost me my $250 deductible. I also purchased a car alarm to go in the car after I received my 760MP, and I bring in my faceplate every night!

The 760MP also comes with a wireless remote that straps onto your steering wheel. This little gadget is a godsend when you need to adjust the stereo while you're driving down the road. You can adjust the volume, change tracks and channels, and a whole lot more. You can even hit an attenuate button which temporarily lowers the volume while you answer you cell phone. Speaking of cell phones... If you have OnStar or some other built-in factory cell phone, there is a way to hardwire it into the 760MP. I don't own such a phone, so I haven't messed with the feature, but it is there.

XM control, I have the Pioneer GEX-910XM Tuner, is very easy to use and intuitive. One thing I noticed that I was not overly thrilled with is that it seemed that the 760MP was truncating the Song/Artist names when displaying XM stations. I have since picked up XM's own USB based XM tuner for your PC/laptop, and found out that it is actually XM itself that is truncating the names of the Artist/Title, regardless of the tuner/receiver that you are using!

My insurance company sent along all of the required parts to install this head unit into my SUV. They also included a free installation from Circuit City, which I gratefully used. So I can't really comment on ease of installation. I just handed the guy my keys, the 760MP, the kit and wiring harness, and wandered off to shop... Easy installation in my book! LOL

I have done one car stereo installation myself long-long ago, and realized then that it cost more buying all of the wire cutters, crimpers, soldering irons, etc. that was needed to cleanly install a car stereo, let alone all the time, that it was much more cost effective to pay someone else to install it for you! Many of your local electronics superstores will install a car stereo you buy from them for free. Take them up on it! All I know, is I have neither the time, nor the patience to ever screw with installing my own car stereo ever again...

Sound quality is excellent, and the nested menu's are pretty straight forward. It took a little time to completely figure out how to adjust all of the settings, and I'm pretty much used to figuring out all of the technical jargon. I can see that someone who is not pretty techno-savvy might have some issues with the programming and settings of the DEH-760MP. One thing of note, I was especially impressed with Pioneers 2 year warranty that is included with their Premier line of car stereos. Something nice to see in this day and age of shrinking warranties.
