I bought this TV 2 months ago after I demoed a Mitsubishi rear projection television (RPTV). I was not happy with the Mits for numerous reasons. So I set out for a set that accurately displayed colors, looked sleek, and didn't charge me an arm and a leg for sound. Having a high end Dolby Digital/DTS receiver and 6 surround speakers including a subwoofer, I had no need for great speakers on the RPTV itself. I don't use them and didn't want to pay a hefty price for them as with Sony's.
After previewing the Pioneer SD-P55A3-K, I was hooked. In my opinion, this set is the most accurate in producing flesh tones and scenery. Everything looked like you would see it in real life rather than just an image on your set. The one thing I loved about this RPTV was that although it was a 55" set, it was not oversized. It's a very streamline design with great lines. The 9 point convergence allows you to precisely align the picture for excellent detail. This feature is only found on your higher end sets. Another feature I really liked was the Audion/Video memory functions. this allows you to set parameters for different inputs (VHS, DVD, Laserdisc, TV). This makes total sense since different sources produce variable picture qualities. The menus are laid out very well and are easy to scroll through.
After I had it professionally ISF calibrated (which I highly recommend), I felt even better about my Pioneer. The service tech who performed the calibration raved about how easy it was to tweak this RPTV into an incredible picture. Watching a DVD is like watching film now. It is by far the crispest, sharpest, most colorful tv set I've ever seen.
The cons I have are few. The remote has such tiny buttons and is a bit difficult for someone with large hands. And lastly, the comb filter it has is adequate but not spectacular. Before calibration, it looked fine. After, it was unbelievable. This high end set should have a 3D Y/C digital comb filter.
I highly recommend this set for anyone serious about home theater experiences. This set will heighten your enjoyment of sports, movies, or just regular tv...whatever your preference. More importantly, it displays images like they're supposed to be: thoroughly detailed with vibrant, lifelike colors.
