Excellant Small Area Receiver

Pros Inexpensive, Pioneer quality
Cons Low power, low connectivity
Recommended it? Yes
The Bottom Line:  Excellant reciever for small areas and audio neophytes; lacks connectivity, but has adequate sound quality.
I bought the Pioneer VSX-108 as a low priced receiver for use in a small room with my computer. It serves as the switching device for copying LPs into my computer for later burning of CDs. I also use it to listen to the cleaned up version of the audio tracks prior to copying them to CD.

The Pioneer VSX-108 has connections for five speakers, two input devices (CD and Aux), Subwoofer Pre-out and input and output connections for a tape recorder. I am using the tape recorder connections to connect to the line input and output connections of my sound card. The unit has Dolby Pro-Logic Processing, 4 Simulated Sound Fields, a Remote Control, Bass & Treble Controls and a 30 Random Preset Station Tuner. If you want to connect a turntable to the Pioneer VSX-108, you will either need a turntable with a built-in pre-amplifier and RIAA equilization or you will need a separate pre-amplifier to connect between the turntable and the receiver. Note that the only front panel connection I could find is the headphone connection. If there are front panel A/V inputs, I can?t find them.

The Pioneer VSX-108 is a very good receiver for small areas where you do not need high volumes. At 50 watts per channel (2 channels), the unit is too small for a main household receiver, especially if you want to drive a full set of five speakers. With a frequency response of 40-20kHz and 0.9% THd, this is not an audiophile quality device, but should be more than satisfactory for most listeners using it in a small area or as a secondary receiver.

Even if this receiver was more powerful and had better quality amplifiers, it wouldn?t suit me as a main receiver because it has line inputs for only three devices. This lack of connectivity may be OK for a beginner or a secondary receiver, but is inadequate for those who have many audio devices.
