Better than my $1900 Yamaha
Pros
Does it ALL at a price you won't believe!
Cons
Manual could be easier, but follow along at it works fine.
Recommended it?
No
The Bottom Line:
Excellent Pioneer quality. True 5.1 dolby DTS sound. Inputs for anything. So cheap you won't believe it could be this good.
Five years ago I bought a Yamaha surround sound receiver amplifier for $1900. The Pioneer VSX D409 is so much better and it only cost $149.
100 watts per channel! One coaxial DTS digital 5.1 dolby and two optical inputs! Wonderful, remote (could be backlit, but hey, for $149, backlit remotes cost more).
DTS (Digital Theater Sound) plays DVD, LD and CD in a variety of Advanced Theater and sound effects modes. the VSX also has a "midnite" mode allowing lower volumne and the surround sound does not get "muddy," like others.
I like the modes where you can select from "Drama, Action, Musical, Expanded," depending on your veiwing subject. Also it automatically switches to DTS, dolby digital or dolby surround sound depending on the input.
The remote is a little small and looks complicated at first, but if you play with it a while, it becomes very easy and intuitive. It also was easy to get it to do the basic controls for my Pioneer HDTV 64" and the Sanyo VCR.
Setup is simple, just follow the manual and go page by page.
The sound is UNBELIEVABLE! We have 5 speakers and a sub-woofer like never before! Every nuance of sound, all corners of the room. It is hard to imagine all this from a $149 product!
We paired it with an Apex AD-660 DVD also from Sam's at $119. How do they make such quality so cheap! The Apex has a digital DTS coaxial input. One cable to the VSX - D409 for 5.1 dolby ditigal DTS sound and one S-Video to the TV.
The picture and sound quality from this combination is absolutely awesome. Felt like we were sitting in a Theater watching a 70mm film!
I'd unquestionably reccomend either or both of these products to anyone. Simple, easy powerful.
