Home Theater System for an apartment

Pros Best value for it's price
Cons Little hard to operate
Recommended it? Yes
The Bottom Line:  Bang for your buck, not for an audio technophile, but good for an apartment.
I brought this receiver as part of an entire home theater system from Costco for just $ 389 plus taxes in December 2000. I am very very pleased with it's performance. The model number of the entire system is HTP-209 and you can find it on the web being sold for almost the same price plus shipping.

Let me tell at the beginning itself that if you are real into top quality sound (I will use only Monster cable kind of guy..), then this system is not for you.

I was ready to spend almost 1000 bucks for a Bose speaker package of 600 bucks plus the price of a receiver, but when I saw that I could get a whole system for under 400 bucks and it wasn't from any small company but Pioneer I was ready to try it. Since I live in an apartment I did not see any point in spending lot of money on a system which I cannot even play loudly for the fear of my neighbours calling the courtesy cop.

As other reviewer mentioned here, getting the sub-woofer to get working during the initial setup was little tricky. It took a call to customer service for me to get it working. But other than that the system is easy to operate once you go thru the manual. The system has two optical digital inputs, but NO OUTPUTS, which is kind of bad. I have my JVC DVD player hooked up thru the optical cable and have a Panasonic 27" TV.

I would suggest folks wanting to having to try out a home theatre system a membership at www.netflix.com. Till recently you could rent unlimited number of DVD'S for just 19.99. They increased the price to $24.99 starting March 2001, which is still worth it.

I have watched over 70 movies so far on this home theater system and now I can't live without it. I use it even to play music by attaching my Sharp MD player and I did not find the sound to be muddy as other reviewer here felt. Again I am a normal guy who lovers music and not a sound technophile.

For the price I got it, it's worth it, as Best Buy sells just the receiver(VSX-D409) for 270 bucks, while I got the whole system (5 speakers and an active powered sub-woofer) for $ 389. The system comes with basic cables. I have been using them and have got a very good pair of telescopic surround speaker stand for 50 bucks from Radio Shack.

The receiver has plenty of input and output connections. My recently brought Panasonic TV has audio out, which I have connected to the TV IN on my receiver and there I have, home theater sound for TV programs too.
