All around, a decent Dolby Digital Receiver
Pros
A good, simple Dolby Digital receiver.

The second remote for this receiver is horribly inept!

The Bottom Line:
Pioneer makes outstanding products, and the VSX-D557 receiver is proof that you can't go wrong with a Pioneer receiver.
The Pioneer VSX-D557 was my first Dolby Digital receiver. For a mid priced receiver four years ago, I think it was a good purchase. It is still competitive with any new receiver. It does, however, lack component video connections and on-screen programming. However, the VSX-D557 is easy to set up and program. It produces 100 watts per channel with it's internal amplifier, and is more than enough for someone looking for basic home theater. It is DVD ready with an optical output. I have my VSX-D557 connected to a Pioneer DV-505 DVD player and have had no problems to report from either product. The DVD player has played any and all DVDs that have been presented to it. It even handled "The Matrix" and it was already a year and half old at that time! Anyone who wants a good basic home theater receiver, will not go wrong with the Pioneer VSX-D557 receiver.
