I recently replaced my 13 year old Sony A/V receiver with the VSX-608 with some disappointing results. I bought the 608 off the internet - sight unseen. Based on its features and price, it seemed to be the most bang for the buck.
It was easy to setup, has good documentation, etc. but has a few things that are missing:
1. The controls are not lighted except for the main display and standby power indicator so you need an external light source to change settings on the unit itself.
2. It has no on-screen display - I don't know if other receivers in this price group have them, but this sure would be nice.
3. You cannot switch directly from one function, like DVD, to another, like VCR1, without toggling through several others.
4. There is no TV display when an audio function is selected -can't channel surf while listening to a CD for example.
5. The audio quality is not on par with the older Sony that it replaced. The audio isn't bad, it's just not as good as it should be.
That said; it does have many nice features such as AC-3 digital, DTS, S-video switching, front A/V jacks, and DNR (digital noise reduction). However; and I'm sorry to disagree with the other reviews, but I don't think that I can recommend this component to anyone -there surely must be a better sounding, more user friendly receiver out there somewhere in this price range.
I guess I have learned not to purchase sight unseen and ears unheard.
